I've been a machinist for about 14 years. I've pretty much always had a decent job making pretty good money. But between the price of gas and the cost of healthcare constantly rising over the past 5 years, i feel it may not be worth it. I'm going back to trade school to be an auto mechanic just so I know I can have my weekends and evenings back. These days it seems like it costs as much to have a job as you end up making. Except you get to see your family less because most shops keep as small a staff as possible and just make you work a shitload of overtime. I've thought about picking up a couple of lawns to maintain this summer and I'll probably do some minor repairs on cars for people, and I can fix just about anything. What kinds of things to you guys do to make extra money?

If you're truly handy put an ad out there (Craigslist, local paper) and you'll probably find plenty of work. Sometimes people just need an extra hand on a DIY project or need something simple like a ceiling fan installed.

Good idea thanks.
If you can machine, you should be able to build engines for dough. You need to get in with the asian suped up car crowd... Really you just need to figure out who wastes the most money on the skill you have.

CarpetRug - Invest in multi family properties. Owner occupy at first, this gets rid of paying a mortgage out of your own pocket. Then just make a small goal of buying one multi family a year(4plex if you can). Once you own about 12-15 units you should be able to quit your job completely. Btw a 4plex is one property containing 4 units.
I've looked into this. Location and type of tenant are so important cause all the laws are stocked against the landlord/owner it seems dependent on State and city. I always thought that if they don't pay, then kick them out. Apparently I was wrong.
