Hard to vote against “Unforgiven” even with near-ringers like “Open Range” and “Tombstone” in the mix. As good as Tombstone is, I’d rate it behind those two simply because they’re fiction so you don’t have to overlook the history to enjoy them.
Of those 4, Unforgiven.
But the best westerns of all time in order are:
Shane over The Good the Bad and the Ugly?
Thats like saying Chicken Marsala is better than Chicken Parm.
Shane’s fantastic.
But, these arent my top 10, theyre the top 10 based on an extensive statistical analysis I did.

What are your thoughts on City Slickers?
I have a real affinity for the spaghetti westerns.
It may just be nostalgia. My dad was really into them, and as a kid we watched them together a lot. I could probably recite A Fist Full of Dollars.
I don’t know if they are all as great as I think they are or if there is nostalgia at play.
Shane is a great movie.
Obviously this is all subjective, but TGTBATU is better than Once Upon a Time in the West.
I voted Tombstone, but the answer is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
I dont know about the Searchers being number 1. I like it and most of it is great, but that section where they get hung up at that wedding really derails it for a while.
I voted Tombstone. Unforgiven is a good one. I don’t see Young Guns on the list. Does Jeremiah Johnson count as a Western? That was a great movie. A lot of good Western and Westernish movies.
Young Guns is great, but it doesn’t compare to Unforgiven or Tombstone, or Open Range.
Not even close.
There are another 50 that come before it.
No mention of Lonesome Dove? For shame…
I voted Open Range. Jeremiah Johnson belongs on this list, as does The Outlaw Josey Wales.
of those 4 its unforgiven for me.
but the searchers is the best western ever made.
I like them too. I suspect they dont make the very top of most lists because the characters are generally one dimensional.
Who wants to watch a movie about a cheap motel?
A couple RIDICULOUSLY underrated westerns:
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Once Upon a Time In The West
Top 2 IMO.
Jeremiah Johnson is my favorite movie period.
But it’s not really a western western like these others. Same with Dances with Wolves.
Western time period, slightly different genre.
