GenErick - yep, they will all be in the same situation next week.
Same situation? The stimulus checks are meant to stimulate the economy, not savings accounts.
It's artificial stimulation. That's not a good thing.
its propping things up until it can recover on its own. we'll see what the results are.
It will recover on its own once the artificial depression is lifted, and people are allowed to go back to work.
In places that didn't lock down, unemployment is at about 3%. Across the whole country it's at about 6%. That's not a crisis anymore. We don't need to be sending checks to people who are working. We need to open up the places that are still stupidly locked down, and let people get back to their lives. People with jobs have money to spend.
that's not the purpose of stimulus checks. stimulus checks aren't unemployment checks, they're meant to be spent to keep the economy moving. the economy SHRUNK 5% last year and that was with some $3T or 12% of the entire economy subsidized in full by the government. think about that. without stimulus plan we would have seen a contraction of 15% or more.
people are drastically underestimating how much the fed has done to keep us from seeing bread lines.
the national unemployment rate is 6% but that doesn't include people that have stopped looing for work or are permanently unemployed. the real unemployment numbers are more likely closer to 9% nationally according to the Fed. that's the average, it's much wose in places like detroit, LA, and Vegas.
Freaky_Hibiki - Mine was spent before it cleared and I have nothing to show for it. I wish I could have at least got a new phone or some sweats that said JUICY on the ass, but I had bills to pay.
On existing debt? I see a riot incoming.
I’m actually just kidding. I’m spending it all on weed and a new bike. I just try to act responsible to earn points on the OG. I’ll still riot and loot if I get the opportunity tho!
Just went to micro center to pick up a cable and there was a line wrapped around the entire store with people holding computers, tvs, game consoles, etc.
Those dollars are going to hit gdp fast!
isnt that the whole idea of a stimulus?
to “stimulate” the economy
it should be given out for use in select sectors for the economy
Given to everyone but used only for things that were shut down
Dining
bars
nightclubs
salons
spas
movies
retail
air travel
hotels
etc… but to have stimulus used at WALMART or amazon doesnt make sense to me.

That's not how it was sold. Where did you see any politicians saying "We need to give money to people who never stopped working, because we want to keep the economy moving."?
The entire rationale behind them has been that people are hurting during the pandemic because they've been locked down and lost their jobs, and they need to be given money to survive until the pandemic is over. The problem is that we're at the tail end of the pandemic right now. They're purposefully keeping lockdown orders in place for no meidcal reason, as they've shown to be ineffective and nowhere in the US is there a great risk for the healthcare system being overrun. The entire reason certain places are locked down is for political reasons, so democrats can justify blowing out the spending.

Absolutely it is. I wasn't being cynical with my OP.
I agree, it SHOULD have been designed that way and probably one of the biggest reasons were seeing a k shaped recovery.

Its in the title of the program: Economic Stimulus. And the people that are "hurting" aren't the people with white collar jobs that haven't lost work, they're the small businesses that are on the verge of losing everything.

Why are they on the verge of losing everything? Because of government intervention. People who didn't have the government intervene on them aren't facing those same troubles.
The government has created a problem, and has offered you a solution, which is more government overreach. How about targeting people who have actually lost work because of dumb government decisions, pay them because they actually were affected, and simultaneously lift all absurd restrictions that are ruining their lives, so they can get back to living them?
Wouldn't that be slightly more helpful than the munchausen by proxy policy they've been following?
In the other stimulus thread someone mentioned that they got a check for $5,600. They then stated they never stopped working. Both adults in their family never missed a beat as far as a paycheck goes. The government just handed them a $5,600 check, no questions asked. How many people were given free money that didnt need it?
This is what infuriates people. Money being handed out to those who dont need it while the people who do need it have to fight for it.
I live in a small town on the water. As such the main revenue for most people revolves around the water. Marina's, crabbing, fishing, boat tours, etc. None of them missed a paycheck. I can count on one hand the number of shops or restaurants that have closed strictly due in part to this pandemic. Even then those places were teetering on closing up shop due to how they are managed.
I don't fault people who were given a handout who didnt need it. It's not their fault the government is ran by a bunch idiots. Many of whom shouldnt even be allowed inside a bank let alone making financial decisions for anyone else.
You want to stimulate your local populace? Then let them open up and fend for themselves. Our government is making the after effect of this pandemic much worse by keeping things closed. Your telling small business owners they can not open up if they can not abide by regulations set forth by them. However you have every big box store in a 100 mile radius that never once had to shut their doors.
Buying shit from big box stores didnt stimulate the economy before this pandemic. Even if it did the effect was menial and short lived. I'm sure in more heavily populated areas, this pandemic has had a negative even disastrous effect on their local economy. Even then how many business's do you know personally and willingly spent your money at those places? I'm going to guess not a whole hell of alot.

That is the literal logic though. Liberals are terrified of opening the economy and so with no end point in place, they're just trying to bide their time by symptomatically treating the problen they created.
Now while I agree that it's better to treat the etiology (heavy handed restrictions like lockdowns or curfews) rather than the symptoms (destruction of small-to-mid-sized businesses and stagnant economy), we need to address the political reality of our situation: If the government is set on continuing these measures, we should at least hope they limit the damage of their short-sightedness.
was that line out of control or what? i walked out.
IT was filling up when i went in, the place was packed by thr time i made it through. Lots of people getting new high end monitors. There was a line of 4 guys camping out for some graphics card that comes out today, had it gotten any larger when you got in (assuming its the same one)?

LOL. i'm not a keynesian nor am i supporting or defending the policy, just pointing out how it's supposed to work. however i do think demand side policy is needed in a time like this albeit implemented with more scalpel and less hatchet.

i agree the program could have been designed better, but they needed something that was easy to explain to the public that could be implemented quickly. perfection is the enemy of progress.
but the idea is if we get money in the hands of people, they'll spend it and the economy will take care of itself and most importantly, us. as i mentioned before, it's this k shaped recovery we're seeing that's the effect of this broad brush approach. they probably should have targeted the recipients of the checks and eligible spending better.
