Just curious of some takedowns when going against a larger opponent. I'm in the 215+ division and at the light end of it. I know good angles and my speed. Just curious of good takedowns for the monsters I'll be up against. Thanks.
I am a small heavyweight and lately the second smallest dude I work out with at 235.
Use the wall or cage on bigger guys when ever possible. Try to stay out of td's that get you underneath your opponent.
I use footsweeps. trips and snap downs alot.
Anything that doesn't involve grabbing your opponent by both lapels and repeatedly snapping him down for 5 minutes.
I'm a smaller heavy guy @205. I like foot sweeps, seoi nage, and tani otoshi as a counter or with an arm drag. The seoi feels nicer to me against larger opponent's because thier size helps carry them over.
pull guard
Foot sweeps.
ok i'm mad. i have been preparing for a takedown war with these big boys and literally every match i had the guy pulled guard on me.............wtf you're a heavy weight pulling guard!!!
lol do you practice them on a regular basis or not? If not, then there is zero point in worrying about what is best as takedowns are like practicing chokes or armbars, you gotta do it on a regular basis to get good at it.
anything will work. just practice it.
i'm a bigger guy and everyone expects me to do the russian tie up or upper body stuff (which i do), but i also like a nice blast double or single.
The key to taking down big people is making them move, this involves winning the grip fighting then making them move their feet by pushing, pulling, back stepping, leg attacks etc.
LittleC - pull guard
Not a good Idea going against a 300 pound grappler when you are around 225. Do not get me wrong LittleC I am one of the monsters I would love for them to pull guard !
AK 47 I would never pull guard on you :-)

This
Hunter- I've been working my takedowns alot preparring for my first tourney in almost 2 years. So I was just looking for a little input on a selection from my arsenal maybe to try. I was by no means looking to try and start using a takedown I didn't know. I had a strategy in my head that I was going to use and it was along the lines of what everyone said. I ended up taking 2nd place I was the smallest guy.
Porkchop- You shut your mouth, no one asked you!
With the gi against a big guy I would always look for a tripod first. Easy to pull off and size doesn't matter much.
Other good gi options...
Establish your grips and then use an inside trip. With a big guy it seems to work well and it helps if you try to clear their other leg as you go to the ground so you end up in side control rather than in their guard.
Duck under to body lock and then leg sweep them to their back.
Sit to single leg and then finish by elevating their leg and foot sweeping them. It's hard for a big guy to keep his balance when you sit and pull him forward. Once you have the leg it is safer (IMO) to lift a big guys leg to finish rather than running the pipe or the like.
Ankle pick.

ok cool, its just funny as there are a LOT of guys who don't worry about ever training takedowns till a week before a tourney and then believe they can drill enough to somehow gain skill. Whats your arsenal? Normally the best ones to use are the ones you feel most comfortable at. Then you have to apply kuzushi, ie what BIC was talking about earlier.
Hunter V
AK 47 has been working them for some time its just he hasn't been in a tournament for a little while and this first one back he was in a weight class which usually has one or two really big guys in it here in FL we are talking 290 + and they tend to be very strong not just the milky fat guys but just big guys. So this was his first tournament back since he has drilling takedowns so he knows practice and the tourny are two different things
But he is really good at them and pulling guard on him is not a smart thing to do he has a really good top game.
He knows I was just kidding about pulling guard.
ah cool. I still say to apply what BIC was talking about. He has a speed advantage so he should get angles and use it. And if he is doing gi grip fight like a mofo first, get your angle, and then attack. As long as he gets them going at a angle and not just backwards, they will fall like a log.
Inside trips work well for me.
