FRANKLIN — A driver who police say shot himself in the leg and then crashed into two vehicles and a utility pole Wednesday, Aug. 12, will face a criminal charge and traffic citations, Franklin police Chief Gordon Ellis said Thursday.
Billy Rush, 35, of Germantown, will be charged with a misdemenaor relating to negligently failing to secure a firearm, Ellis said.
Ellis said Rush suffered a gunshot to the left thigh from a large-caliber weapon, which triggered the crashes. A .44 caliber handgun was found inside Rush’s vehicle, and Ellis said the wound appeared self-inflicted.
He is accused of driving his Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck across three lanes of traffic, crashing into a car, then hitting a parked car in a parking lot before heading back into the roadway and striking a utlity pole just before 12:30 p.m. Wednesday on Second Street in Franklin.
Rush was flown by CareFlight medical helicopter to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. By Thursday evening, he had been discharged, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
There were no other injuries reported.
