Bisping on McGregor's cardio problems.

william795 - He just needs to spend more time building his aerobic base. It doesn't matter if it's with a bike, running, or a stairmaster. LSD takes years of consistent training to get yourself in peak aerobic shape. The anaerobic you can get there much quicker. He needs to focus more on daily aerobic training and less on anaerobic.

What would a good ratio be?

Like 45 mins x3 per week? How much time dvoted to other forms of conditioning etc?

I would think 3x/week @ 40 min and then one long run (bike, whatever) @ 60-90min.

Your anaerobic work will come from your sport specific training. Rounds in the gym. No sprints or anything is really needed, imo. Lift weights for strength (nothing high tempo).

Then once you have a fight scheduled and in camp, you can focus on your anaerobic training to peak on fight night.

4x a week @ 40min and @ 60-90min may actually be better.

Durning the lsd runs keeping your heart rate at probably 60-70% max HR.

Wasn't Conor running on an underwater treadmill for the Mayweather fight?

Conor's cardio is genetic. Those long arms need more energy so he gets tired.

It would be interesting to see if Conor could improve his cardio via running. Of all CV workouts I find running the most taxing.

I find swimming, rowing and especially cycling much easier.

Exactly.  Genetically Conor cannot run and therefore will never have cardio.

Not to mention that gigantic head, which requires Tito-like oxygen levels to function.

Lol we can sit here all day and analyse what exercises we think conor does or whether theyre better then running etc i Bisping picked on the running aspect overall meant something is lacking in his camp and that hes getting distracted. Maybe conor needs to focus more on his training in general.

There's footage of Aldo sparring Mikey Garcia, and Aldo wilted after two round of light sparring.

Let Bisping do two rounds with Andre Ward, and talk about Conor's cardio problem. MMA vs Boxing cardio just sin't a fair comparison.

Running is great for cardio…i don’t know if anything else is better or not but I know conor has bad knees, maybe Mike is right tho and conor just hates to run

Jogging is also a great way to ruin your knees.  Conor was doing a lot of bike work which you think would have been beneficial from a cardio perspective.

Honestly, I think it’s more of a mental hurdle that he has to overcome more than anything else.

Ask floyd mayweather and nick/Nate Diaz how their knees are going

Indeed he was. On that pre-fight show they showed that, and mentioned he doesn’t like to run since he had a knee operation. And come on, it’s old school thinking. I certainly believe running can indeed be an awesome cardio tool. But it’s not the only one!

He seemed to have done his homework. Poise, skills, trying to figure out the new inside style Floyd was bringing, all that mattered too. And Conor’s got an explosive style that burns more energy. Still he does need better cardio.

As for cycling being bad for cardio… hell no. I’ve never been in better shape and that’s cycling. Ask the Diaz bros. BUT, it’s not practical during a camp as you need 2-3-4-5 hour rides, hills and climbs, etc.

Yeah all that Ivan Drago shit is lame. Go hit the road or trails.

I'm very opinionated on this and it's not necessarily a opinion most people subscribe to.

First off , for the people who say running ruins your knees. It does if you run incorrectly and heal strike.

Running can have wide ranging benefits. If you're pushing yourself to the limit running hills it's going to have massive cardio benefits.

Personaly I think that high intensity excersise where you almost need a day to recover should be used when mma training ( grappling/striking)

im a fan of middle distance jogging ( 5 miles or so, about 45 minutes)   The blood flow can help heal injuries and it's a great form of base training).

I'm mainly a fan of running because I believe it's a big part of our eveloution and think it's something we should all do athlete or not. To the point where I think fighters should run every other day and not even count is part of their training.

I love the UG strength and conditioning coaches. Good read.

I know right?

Conor doesn’t like to run? He grew up playing football 3/4 times a week. Training twice a week followed my a match on a Saturday or Sunday.

Yes he’s fucked up his knee but still doing road work. I’ve said it before multiple times on here. Conors cardio is mostly mental. If a fight is going his way he can go on for days. See his early fights and the holloway fight. The first diaz fight fucked him up mentally and I think it will always be there now.

Conor does stuff like run on treadmills, run in water and ride bikes in the desert. I've said it all along that kind of training is new age pseudoscience. Treadmills are pointless unless you're just starting out and bike riding along the flat Las Vegas highway is laughable. Conor's whole loyalty obsession has him surrounded by yes men.

Dont use Conor's knee as an excuse either because Dom Cruz said his cardio routine is sprint based and even guys like DC do track work.

I'd like to know Conor's RHR. If it's in forties, I'm really surprised

When I was doing Muay Thai, the basic requirement in camp was a 10k (6 mile) run every morning. No exceptions. 6 days a week. It sucked, but I had better cardio than Olympic marathoners.

Rowing, biking, and other cardio stuff were easy by comparison - except the fucking stairmaster. Fuck that machine, it almost killed me by pegging my heart rate over 190 bpm.
