BJ Penn v Takanori Gomi

The Prodigy v The Fireball Kid

At the time this was a massive fight in the lightweight division.

Both guys continued to fight past their prime but it's good to see them compete when at the top of their game.

After this loss, Gomi went on a 10 fight unbeaten streak and was considered the number one LW in the world.

Fuck do I miss The Fireball Kid

He joined the UFC far too late, compiled a UFC record of 4-10.  Shame.

From 2004 to 2006 he was definitely the best lightweight competing in MMA.

Penn looked like a killer in this fight.

This is right when Penn started entering his physical and mental prime. After this fight is when Penn shocked the world and  finished Matt Hughes in the first round to become the UFC Welterweight champion.

was Penn 24 or 25 here?

i believe Penn entered his prime at 25

This fight with Gomi could have been considered a lightweight #1 or world championship fight!

2005 when Gomi took out Kawajiri and Sakurai, he was unbelievable

How can he be the top ranked LW when he lost to BJ and BJ only got better during that time frame?

These guys were big fish in a small pond. Legends for sure though.

Beating sub-par fighters in Japan doesn't make you the best LW in the world. He was fun to watch but was never number 1.

Ref is a idiot.  He stands them when Gomi is in BJs guard doing damage.

My two favorite Lightweights of all time.

1. Bj

2. Gomi

I was so excited yet nervous for this fight

Interesting to see Penn utilize a wrestle first strategy.

Gomi was 13-1 from 2004 to 2006 whilst Penn was 4-3 during the same timeframe.

I thought it was generally accepted that the best lighter fighters were in Japan at the time.

My memory is hazy though, would be interested to see what the LW rankings were back then.

The majority of the best LWs were in Japan at the time.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

This guy might want to google Gomi, Sakurai, Kawajiri, Aurelio, Hansen, Kid Yamamoto, Ribeiro, Sudo etc...

Maybe read up a little on PRIDE Bushido, K1 Heros, Shooto,

Edwards was the uncrowned UFC champ when he beat Franca and Thomson in the UFC in 2004. In 2005 he lost to Hansen in PRIDE. Hansen himself would go on to lose to PRIDE fighters Sakurai, Kawajiri, and Aoki over the next year.

Edwards himself went 1-4 after that Hansen fight even though he had been the uncrowned UFC champ in 2004, you know when 90% of the divisions top fighters were competing in Japan. Franca who was a top UFC LW at the time also went to Japan and lost to Boku in 2005 while Boku was not even one of Japan's ten best LW fighters. At the start of 2005 Boku was the 29th ranked LW in the world using fightmatrix rankings yet he was able to beat one of the UFC's top 3 LWs.

Glad to hear Chap thinks prime Kid Yamamoto, Gomi, Sakurai, Kawajiri, Shoalin, etc... are sub-par fighters.

Good move, you were shown to be dead wrong and talking out of your ass so you resort to name calling as you are incapable of forming coherent arguments.

Keep showing yourself to be clueless.
