BJ Penn's Wrestling History

BJ Penn mentioned in a recent interview that after he won the mundials, he wrestled for West Valley Junior College. I found an excerpt from his book on-line where he mentions that he participated in a few events and did well, but never accomplished any major titles or even came close.

Anyone know anything more about this?

I have wondered how an accomplished BJJ athlete would do if they took up wrestling without prior experience. There are many examples going the other way -- accomplished wrestlers who have done well in BJJ -- but I don't know of any like this. Very curious how he fared.

Well, there was no mention of "nuthugging", GSP greasing, etc., etc. Threads without that sort of discourse tend to sink fast.

I had no idea BJ had competed at the college level in wrestling.

I just googled West Valley Junior College and they recently dropped wrestling :-(

You are correct, he did wrestle in JC. I know he goes a little bit more in depth in his book "why I fight" but i can't remember offhand.

I believe Rener Gracie wrestled! Phone Post

I had no idea either. In his book though, at least in the part I read, he says hardly anything more than I've mentioned in the thread.

I know that Handy has said that when he was up in the clinch with BJ, he found BJ to be a freak of nature... one of the strongest guys (of his size) he has ever faced...  He found him almost impossible to take down.
