BJJ Brazil popularity after UFC1

How popular was BJJ prior to UFC1. I was under the impression that the Gracie name was huge in Brazil prior to the UFC. During Royce's hall-of-fame interview, he mentions that nobody in Brazil knew of BJJ before it became so popular in the states.

I would have thought it was already a huge sport in Brazil prior to it coming to the states.

the common misconception about bjj is that its popular in brazil. to those that actually practice it, sure, its popular, like how go karting is popular amongst those that kart, but to those that dont, they wouldnt know dick about it
bjj isnt that popular or well known amongst the general population. it is seen as being thuggish, and has a negative image attached to it

I think Walbjj is right, I wonder if capoeira is alot more well known an art in Brazil.

I always thought it was an "in" with any brazillian girl I ever met... not one of them knew the gracies or what BJJ was... BJ they were familiar with though...

I was hanging out with a bunch of Brazilian people before, and when I mentioned BJJ, they didnt know what I was talking about. When I mention The Gracie's still they didnt know. But when i mentioned Vale Tudo, they knew it and were like "that shit's crazy"

I don't know about Brazil, but here in Australia Capoeria is WAY more well-known.
Whenever I say I do BJJ, people always ask
"oh, is that that breakdance, fight thing?"
