BJJ Gym Around Indiana University?

Where would be a good place to train jiu-jitsu around the University, i dont have a car and ill only really be able to train at night.

I'm sure a school as large as IU has some sort of Judo/BJJ group.  Look into school groups.

Check these guys out. Thet meet right on IU campus.

iubjj has been around in some form or another for about forever. Historically it extends from Caique to Greg Lucas, to Tim & Kedar, to Evan & Paul. Greg's school is in Bedford but you're going to get decent purple belt or greater instruction at iubjj regardless of whether he shows up at the IU meetings or not.

No disrespect intended but I believe MCMA only has a single BJJ blue belt & no actual BJJ program. Certainly it's OK as a starting point for an MMA student but it doesn't belong on a thread specifically asking about BJJ @ IU.

I remember training in the hyper bldg on campus many many years ago. TKD club, Judo Club and others got together to cross train in the judo room from 6:30 to 8 PM. Mr. Burns was Judo instructor, Larry Davenport, Dexter Grow (my friend) and Scott Ross (not Ross Scott) were TKD guys. We also had Charlie, a kung fu dude with bad ass skills, I trained with him for about a year.

Miss those days!

I used to meet with some guys for BJJ and Muay Thai at the hyper. Monroe County Martial Arts, Octopus BJJ are others in Bloomington. Phone Post

MCMA's BJJ program is outsourced and is headed by a purple belt now, I believe. I drive an hour for my BJJ :-/ Phone Post

Holy crap! I've been outsourced! What a tough market! Ok, I joke...I joke. Hey guys, I'm Mick I'm the blue belt over at MCMA and thanks to everyone for the mention. So yes, I am only a blue belt, but I do think we have a quite a bit to offer someone. First I am under James Clingerman and Team JC has a been a great resource for us. Previous to training with James, I was under Jeff Westfall and Bruce Shepard. And like everyone else I have probably attended more than my fair share of seminars with a lot of guys. I am also an instructor under Dan Inosanto in Kali and Jun Fan and have worked a lot with Erik Paulson.

MCMA has actually kind of been a hub for BJJ and submission grappling since the mid to late 90s. We had a BJJ program for a long time and then it died off due to my job. but now I am getting back into it. Kedar and John use to come over and train with us, off and on. Jason Winkle use to teach a class at our place (along with a class a Greg's and several other places)and we use to host more seminars. I would say that it is because of Jason Winkle, Greg Lucas, and MCMA's owners Steve and Linda Scott that you have as much MMA and BJJ as you do in the Bloomington Area. With that said as great as MCMA has been over the years, we (the BJJ, Muay Thai, and MMA guys) are opening a new place in Jan. of 2011. It will be called Vortex Martial Arts Gym. It will have BJJ 3x a week, MMA twice a week, and Stand-up classes 3x a week. It will be on North College in the same building as Next Generation Fitness and Arthur Murray Dance Studio. We are doing small classes out of Next Gen. right now. But we will be kicking a full time facility in Jan. I will keep you guys posted.

At any rate there a lot of great places to train in the area between IUBJJ, Tim Sledd, Greg, us, or others you should find something that fits your needs.

Take care,

Mick

Trained at MCMA in early '90s when BJJ consisted of watching the Gracie VHS tapes.  Steve Scott was always

cool.
