BJJ in Chile?

Just thought I would see if by chance anyone here knows of any bjj schools in Santiago Chile.

I have been looking for a while, and found nothing. I would settle for no-gi submission grappling, or maybe a good judo school with a focus on the ground...

Any leads appreciated.

BJJ is not happening in Chile that I can tell. Don't forget, the martial arts were under the control of the military until recently. I asked my father-in-law to find a jiu-jitsu school in the middle 1990's during visit. I ended up giving a demonstration to the marine academy. google Jose Riesco to see if he can give you any info.

ps play soccer or snowboard!

What?  Dogfight returning to the BJJ fold!  That's one of the 7 signs of the matpocalypse....

I happen to be from Santiago, Chile and Victor Vasquez is teaching classes there. He teaches in a couple of locations. Where are you staying?

I also know in Valparaiso Rolker and Royler have an association. So BJJ is in Chile not as strong as Soccer or Snowboarding... Is summer now, so you can't do any snowboarding... you can always surf...

In any case, I was in Santiago last Dec. and trained at Estadio Palestino in Ave. Kennedy... this is right next to a mall call Alto Las Condes. Victor is a great guy and his students are all very nice.

This is his site:

Good luck and have a great time downn South... Stop by this place called Fuente Alemana and get yourself a lomo palta mayo...

ttt

Whoa, thanks Kramercito - That is the best lead I've had. I just checked out the website, and it looks great!

I've been living down here for the better part of year. My place is actually in Providencia, just around the corner from Fuente Alemana (which is actually probably a bad thing if you want to take sides with my arteries...)

The website shows classes in Centro and in Las Condes. Guess I have to figure out which the shorter commute will be. Or does he have any other locations.

Thanks again for the lead. Got any trips to Stgo. coming up?

ps. to Mr. Kesting: better prepare for the Apocalypse.

Dogfight,

I was there in December for a few days... I won't be back until late in the year (Xmas time)... although my wife and I talked of a trip in late July.

Victor and his students are very friendly...
call Victor man... he is a super nice guy. Tell him Cancino sent you...

I saw this address on his site too... now that you mention you are in Providencia.

Sempai Matias Vasquez (I think this is Victor's Son):
AV. Providencia con nueva Los Leones, Stgo.
(Caracol Los Leones) Local 61
Horarios: Lunes, Miercoles, Viernes de 18 a 19 Hrs. & de 19 a 20 Hrs.

Let me know how things go...

Sounds great. My wife is from Las Condes and I look forward to the next trip there!

jayhof, you married a Chilean gal... sorry to read that my brother... hehehe just kidding man.

Actually BJJ it has a presence in Chile. It has been there for a while. Not as big as in the US, but Victor is one of the first guys who got addicted to BJJ. There are a couple of other dudes, who in my personal opinion seemed quite shady... But while I was in Chile I rolled with Victor, who is the first Chilean black belt. He had another black belt there... Alvaro Bobadilla from Rio... light guy with great skills.

I didn't meet the fellas running schools in Valparaiso, Concepcion, but Victor spoke highly of them.

They have organized a number of MMA competitions and everyone talks about these "Vale Todo" events. Maybe not everyone, but a number of people.

Anyway, I can't wait to read Dogfight impression on the school and the guys.

Kramercito - you are knocking me out man. The providencia address is like 200 meters from my office. I swung by there last night out of curiosity - All the signs on the place say Hapkido, but it looks like they have mats. I will pop over tonight during the bjj class time you posted and see what is up!

Jayhof - my gf is from Las Condes too.

Dogfight,

let me say this in Buen chileno: Teni que puro ir no mas po'

The providencia school appears to be ran by Victor's son, who is a purple belt. I didn't get a chance to meet him, but if he is like his old man... everything should be super cool...

Unlike your girls... I'm a "guachaca" from Vitacura.

Suerte loco, y escribe pa' contarme como fue todo...

Chaito,

Jose Antonio Cancino

DogFight, bad news... I think the Providencia place is no longer offering BJJ, but he said to call him if you need more info: 9 594 24 89

e-mail me man... kramercito@hotmail.com

I can tell my brothers to contact you. They both teach at Universidad Finis Terrae en Pedro de Valvida... close to Providencia. They just started to do Jiu Jitsu.
