BJJ training with self defense in mind

Try kickboxing. Throw in some headbutts.

Very effective in the pavement arena.

Learn what they teach you and even though you may not ever use it, the principles are the things you should be training. Also, always train with the mentality that you can get hit from a certain position. Plus, just because they teach it doesn't mean it will fit in your game totally. BJJ is a buffet. Take a little of this site of that and make it your own. Don't turn your nose up at certain moves. Learn them in a way that way you know how to beat them. Essentially you need to make your BJJ your own. Train it all. Even if you don't use it now as a white or whatever belt you are, you make actually use it down the line at brown black belt. There are things I learned at white belt that i never used from white to brown that i use regularly at brown belt now. Phone Post 3.0

Check out Javi Vasquez' videos online. He is one of the few BJJ guys who is really trying to evolve the self-defense aspects of the art. But I agree with the posters above who said the fundamentals of body control, movement, distance management, leverage, etc., are what you really need at this stage. Specialization can come later.
