This is not just a random shot at the UFC. I think there are things the UFC can do to improve this situation.
First of all, is the UFC just putting on "exciting fights", or are we figuring out who the best fighter in the weight class is by establishing a list of contenders to fight the champ?
The UFC's indecision on that question is the problem.
I keep saying this, but I would like the see the UFC give a brief "snapshot" of the order of the top 5 contenders in each weight class to start off the fight or the PPV. It would give a pecking order or hierarchy to the division, and plainly spell out "who" is "where" and "in what order". It would also add much needed momentum and continuity from show to show.
Why does everyone think there is no one to fight Silva? Okami is the clear cut #1 contender, and has been for a while. Why are Maia and Bisping rumored as next in line?
This is the problem with the UFC establishing exciting, marketable, and respectable contenders like Franklin and Hendo. They fought, but it was meaningless as it was at 205. So by pitting Franklin x Hendo at 205, you just lost two of your best contenders at 185.
Marquardt was also in the mix, and I do understand that the loss to Thales may have justified Leites getting his shot, but after losing to Kampmann, Thales' wins are all weak besides the questionable win over Nate. The clearcut top contenders at 185 to Silva's belt are Marquardt, Hendo, Franklin, and Okami, yet they do not seem to be in the running for the belt.
Why not Marquardt/Franklin? Marquardt/Hendo? Marquardt/Okami? Okami/Hendo?
Does anyone else agree with the need to clearly establish an order of top contenders? Or do you just like watching whatever fights the UFC deems necessary or exciting?
good post
Thank you, forrestfan.
I completely agree; the UFC is a giant clusterfuck (as all mma has been), and some semblance of order would make the sport more appealing both to the casual and hardcore fan. Rank the fuckers, and let that have some bearing on who faces whom.
agree

Couldn't agree more. Thank you, and er095 too.
Uncle Justice has properly ranked The Correct and listed each of it's contenders in a logical, succinct fashion before the start of each PPV.
Uncle Justice is totally correct. Good post.
Fuckin love you guys. I could've used a little more help in the 5-6 threads before this, but wtf... gotta stay positive.

Maia's wins are at least as good as Okami's, and he has no losses.

I'm tellin' ya--this is exactly what WAMMA is trying to do--not just in the UFC, but across the board of MMA....and they're trying to do it without "owning" fighters or organizations.

Yeah, that's a fair statement, but Yushin's only loss was to the clear #1 contender in Franklin, which was way back in mid-'07, and he's won 3 in a row since.
I guess my point is, who the fuck knows who's next or deserving or not? Thales had a bunch of meaningless wins (Sell, Sword, Jensen), but apparently that was enough for the shot... or maybe it was due to Okami's injury. Again, I don't know, but I would like to.
They could easily assemble a top 5, and explain that Okami is unavailable due to injury, which would jump the next guy up. Anything to make the overall title race more defined instead of confusing.

Okay, but it's called "WAMMA" and they associated themselves with Bill Goldberg voluntarily. Next!
PS: Uncle Justice is correct.
doubleRistretto - Yeah, Leites title shot really was questionable since Marquardt beat the fucking bejesus out of him and he won on a technicality.
Marquardt got dropped in the first round and Leites was easily in control of the fight until he was hit with an illegal knee. Herb Dean didn't explain to him clearly that he could take time to recover and he thought that he would lose the fight if he didn't continue right away, but he still managed to keep up with Nate and not lose the fight.
BJM said that Marquardt's piledriver should have been an instant DQ, by the way. Let's not rewrite history because Thales had a poor performance against Anderson.
By the way, I agree with UJ on the need for UFC rankings.
Agree with UJ 100%
I don't think that they establish top 5 lists in the UFC based on the Pay-per-view timing. They don't want too many good matches per pay-per-view, so they spread them out so you will buy them all.
Establishing a clear pecking order for the title would force the UFC to have some stacked cards, sometimes shit cards, and have no room to finagle a decent card if someone gets hurt.
