Five-time Strikeforce veteran Bobby Green (19-5 MMA, 0-0 UFC) will make his octagon debut at February's UFC 156 event against nine-time UFC fighter Jacob Volkmann (15-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC).
USA TODAY Sports today learned from sources close to the fighters that both athletes have verbally agreed to the matchup and bout agreements are expected to be finalized shortly.
UFC 156 takes place Feb. 2 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook. The main event is a featherweight title fight between champion Jose Aldo and former lightweight champ Frankie Edgar.
Green vs. Volkmann is expected to take place on the evening's preliminary card, but UFC executives have yet to make an official announcement.
The booking comes less than 24 hours after Strikeforce officials announced the promotion's Jan. 12 event would be the last to air with broadcast partner Showtime. The promotion isn't expected to host any more events, and Green now joins Strikeforce veterans Derek Brunson, Caros Fodor, Robbie Lawler and Bobby Voelker as Strikeforce athletes booked into UFC fights in the past 24 hours.
Shit just got real.
Very good fight. Volkmann is a tough fight for anyone but Green is a live dog here.
Volkmann, this isn't a hard one to choose.
