just wanted to get some opions on this. i was at a tournament last weekend and got on a guy's back and slapped on a body triangle and held it for pretty much the whole match. no points were awarded. i think this is pretty dumb considering that it is a much harder position to escape than the traditional hooks. any thoughts?
Were you stalling?
I asked this in a thread awhile back. Gotta get the hooks and the points then change up to the body triangle.
The body triangle is just as controlling as having the back with hooks, so I definitely think it should be given points.
Greg
Points are given for the major positions that EVERYONE can pull off.
A body triangle is not even possible for the majority of BJJ practitioners.
body triangle will be awarded points under the new adcc rules...
"A body triangle is not even possible for the majority of BJJ practitioners."
What? Unless there's a pretty big size disadvantage i'd imagine most people could do it. Not that it matters at all, omoplata setups can take a bit of dexterity and flexability, does that mean that sweeps off omoplatas shouldn't be scored since not everyone can do it?
Most competitions i've been to give points for it, and they should.
hey Chris -
good luck in the 8 man tournie
Naga rules are wack!!! they give subjective points for submission attempt... i think that is pretty lame..get the sub...
I was at a naga and people were getting points for attempted subs that were no where near close...
So giving points for a body triangle is not part of the sport... you take the back you have to get the hooks...
if you start giving points for body triangle from the back then you have to start giving points for body triangle from the guard position...
I ask about this at every tournament I compete or ref at and it is about 50/50 on whether they count it as points. I personally think body triangle from the back should definitely be 4 points as it is just as contorling if not more controling as hooks.
"good way to get footlocked anyway"
You must be doing it wrong, I have never had anybody get a footlock since I started using the body triangle, seems the foot is well protected. Maybe your just crossing your legs instead of a true body triangle?
I've been leglocked a few times if i kept the dangling leg in between his legs (no idea how he got a footlock from there though). Most people i see doing the bodytriangle try to hide the dangling leg under the knee (on the outside) which should nullify leglock attacks (i have a hard time getting it in that position though).
Adam-if you're fighting within a weight class, then you should be able to pull the body triangle off.
I imagine this will just go the way of the half guard pass-eventually it will be scored.

"if you start giving points for body triangle from the back then you have to start giving points for body triangle from the guard position..."
huh, not really.
the difference between the two is - you aren't getting points for keeping butterfly hooks or crossed legs in ordinary guard, either.
Grappler's Quest gives you points for the body triangle just like getting the hooks in. Not sure about Naga.
Under official CBJJ rules, you do NOT get 4 points for the body triangle if you have someone's back.
At the referee's seminar this year at the Pan AMs, someone asked that question and Alvaro was very clear in his response: No.
I know of 2 ways to submit someone via ankle lock who body triangles me. If you "hide" your foot behind the leg instead of dangling it between the legs, that actually makes it even easier to do one of the submissions.
It is a terrible way to lose, but I agree that a body triangle cannot be done by all people so it doesn't count as a "position". Did your coaches keep an eye on the reffing and question why you didn't get points? Good luck in the future.
Can you elaborate TPK? I'd love to have a submission from there :)
