one of my goals this year is to do more reading and thought why not a book on s & c? i've been interested in and participated in some kind of lifting/ martial arts for a good part of my life but for some reason never bothered to read a single book on either subject. is there one book that you would recommend? not necessarily a great book that summarizes but a book that you were really able to take something from or just left an impression?
"dinosaur training" by brooks kubik
"infinite intensity" by ross enamait (rosstraining.com)
Left bench is correct. Ross Enamait is the real deal. Also Science and Practice of strength and conditioning, Facts and fallacies of fitness by Dr Mell Siff.
Ross is good
i like berardi for nutrition stuff (Grappler's guide to sport nutrition, Gourmet Nutrition)
you want science or routines?
Ross book is an excellent source of routines. Books by guys like Siff will give you the science.
i hear the book "starting Strength 2nd ed." is really good. I also recommend:
Scrawny to Brawny
Power to the People by Paval
"...not necessarily a great book that summarizes but a book that you were really able to take something from or just left an impression?"
LeftBench posted some good ones. Believe it or not, I'd like to add "Herschel Walker's Basic Training" to the list. It's old and while the technical info isn't cutting edge, it is solid. This book had a huge influence on my lifestyle while growing up.
"Getting Stronger" by Bill Pearl is a pretty good basic book as well
I wore the cover off my "Getting Stronger," for a good scientific base of knowlege get "Essentials of Strength and Conditioning" by Baechle(?) it's the text for the NSCA CSCS test.
thanks for all the feedback guys, much appreciated.
For serious:
Periodization Training For Sports by Tudor O. Bompa
For fun:
The SuperAthletes (David Willoughby) http://www.amazon.com/super-athletes-David-P-Willoughby/dp/0498066517
The Mighty Atom (Ed Spielman)

Holy cow, I can't believe how much they want for The Mighty Atom. I have one, wish I had about 10. I've read it once every couple of years since my brother gave it to me as a birthday gift in the early 80's.
Stampy
the "dinosaur training" books always get good reviews... & everyone here knows im a leech on Ross nuts.
Power Training by Robert dos Remedios.
"Coach Dos" was the 2006 NSCA strength coach of the year, working with hundreds of athletes. The book is outstanding. He gets right to the point and lays out the programs in simple language.
$20.00 well spent.
If you are ready for a deep swim, Supertraining by Siff, NSCA's Essentials for Strength and Conditioning,Science and Practice of Strength Training
by Vladimir M. Zatsiorsky, etc many other good reads.
For basic stuff and easy to read you can pick up at any big bookstore:
- I second the Mens Health Power Training by Robert des Remedios, it is to the point and very understandable
-New Rules of Lifting by Lou Schuler and Awlyn Cosgrove
-Core Performance by Verstegen
-Functional Training by James Radcliffe
-Jumping into Plyometrics by Don Chu
-Training for Speed, Agility and Quickness by Brown and Ferrigno
-Sports Power by Sandler
Some favourites:
Dinosaur Training by Brooks Kubik
Infinite Intensity and Never Gymless by Ross Enamait
Subscription to Milo
The Key to Might and Muscle by George Jowett
The Complete Keys to Progress by John McCallum
Wrestling Physical Conditioning Encyclopedia by John Jesse
wow, lot of books. just got grappler's guide to sports nutrition and thinking of power training next because of the "easy reading" part.
"you want science or routines?"
i suppose science since that's what i lack most but it's probably best that i start w/ something easier. i've heard a lot of good things about Siff and hopefully will get to it later in the year. thanks again for all the recommendations.
