... fight made his pro debut last night. From Yahoo! Sports:
"A former Golden Gloves champion who killed a man in a bar fight six years ago will make his professional boxing debut Friday night.
"I've worked hard to try and get my life back in order and boxing has served to focus my energy on something positive," said Jason Cook, who was charged with manslaughter and sentenced to five years in a work-release program. He is currently on probation.
"I did a stupid thing and it's something I'll always have to live with," Cook told The Times of Munster.
Cook got into a fight with Stephen Lake outside a LaPorte bar on May 20, 2001, and "one good punch" snapped Lake's neck, said attorney Kim DeWitt, who prosecuted the case.
"(The fight) was something that I should have done a better job of walking away from," the 28-year-old Cook said. "I tried several times to walk away from him, but it ended up happening. And the result was that someone died and I paid the price for my mistake."
Kid my brother grew up with go KO'd at a frat party and hit his head
falling. Dead. 155 lb trained might not kill someone before they hit the
ground...but the concrete might when they land.
Too bad drunken assholes who pick fights with the wrong guys don't live long enough to learn their lessons.
Streetfights are serious and people need to realize that they are taking their lives in their hands every time they they wanna posture and act like a hard-ass.
this happend to a person i went to high school with.
he was trying to walk away. as my friend went to leave the bar he was confronted by the guy who pushed him. my friend shoved him back and the guy fell down, hitting his head and causing a severe head trauma.
it took years of litigation before it was over. my friend was not found responsible for the death in the end.

My brother last boxing match was somewhere between 132 and 145 maybe (won junior olympic nationals at 125 in 1991)... This was about 13 years ago.
He hit a guy and the guy hit his head on the pavement on the way down and went into a coma for several months. He spent 5 years in prison. Small guys who are trained should avoid fights, too.
2 High School kids got into a fight in the parking lot.
One KOs the other, who then hits his head on the ground.
Kid goes into a coma. Puncher does a couple years for assault. 8 years later, the kid dies. They try and find him guilty of manslaughter. he does more time.
a good friend of mine used to be a prison guard and he says a lot of guys in there were there because they accidentally killed somebody in a street fight, its more common than you think..be careful and just walk away

Yes, it's a good thing to remember constantly. Unfortunately, sometimes our ego or instincts or whatever get the best of some of us.
I had a situation just yesterday where a guy started with me over me apparently 'cutting him off' (which was bullshit, I put my blinker on and he was doing a consant speed 1/2 mile behind me and he accelerated very rapidly when he saw my blinker go on). Anyway, I waved to apologize then moved on, even after I apologized he tried to push it. To think of all the places I could be right now if I obliged him in his challenge...
I've walked away from a few street fights and also got some of my friends to do the same. It's just not worth it. Some drunk guys start talking crap to the wrong guy and the drunk guys always end up hurt and trying to press charges.
he broke the guys neck from the punch itself and not the guys head hitting the ground? WTF, I didn't even realize that was possible. Wow. And I bet it's true that there are a ton of guys doing time behind bars because they accidentally killed some guy in what at first appeared to be a harmless streetfight.
