It's pretty simple..Conor agreed to a contract that requires promotion. He tried to get out of it the last minute. How is he not in the wrong? Any objective sane person sees this. 
It's a pretty common tactic in sports and entertainment. You see it all the time in the NFL - Kam Chanellor recently held out while under contract to the Seahawks same with the boxer Andre Ward- or even with stars on TV series or film franchises. Not sure why people are acting like he's violating some sacred trust.
