Any idea where to get them in the UK? im pretty sure customs would take a dim view of me trying to import one.
Or failing that, any ideas how to improvise/make one myself?

1/2 inch metal plate(mild steel if your cheap, brass or titanium if your not)measure your ring sizes, create a wooden blank version then trace it onto metal, cut out and finish with a fine file then a polishing cloth(or wheel if you have access)
Best improv knuck is a climbers carabiner(sp?)

I expermented a little with using a carabiner. I would not recommend it. If you don't throw a straight punch, or if you hit at an odd angle it can ride up and hurt your knuckles. I found I had to be careful also about how I gripped the carabiner. I a fight would not risk this. I find a hand load is just as a effective, safer, and more discreet. I have found my leatherman makes a fine handload. ;)
I recently discovered that a combination padlock fits nicely in the ol mitt. A little awkward but provides several striking surfaces with minimal manipiulation. Easier to explain if caught with one as well.
