Brock Reminds Me of Tom Big Cat Erikson

Remember when the Big Cat was supposed to be the future of MMA?  He never lived up to the hype but I think Brock might.

If he smashes Mir, he could be on his way.

btw, Dana White says Brock is 285 right now. Dayum.

He reminds me of the Junkyard Dog, Brock's built more like a black guy

Erikson never got consistent contracts to fight and make money regularly.

Thats not on him.

He also never added high level BJJ and striking to his game, which is.

Im still a fan though. He was ducked by tons of guys while he came up.

In Eriksons prime many of the champions were basically wrestlers.

And they were ALL scared of him.

LOL....i always think of tom erikson with him as well.

I couldnt believe how bad Erikson looked against Silva.

Whatthe hell happened to him?

If Erikson was given the opportunities Brock was instead of being relegated to fighting K1 against Shannon Briggs he would have been much more relevant

Didnt Erikson always ask for a ridiculous amount of money?

"He also never added high level BJJ and striking to his game, which is."

True.  I think he felt that he was strong enough to steamroll everyone and just GNP.

He shouldve known better when it didnt work against Bustamante.

Ricco Chipparelli probably priced Tom out of alot of fights.

He looked worse against Fabricio Werdum in Pride. That fight wasnt even competitive and Erikson looked like he wanted to be anywhere else but in the ring.

One of my buddies wrestled Erikson a couple of times, and said Erikson always smelled like shit.

What happened was Tom was 42 years old and was having only his second fight in four years. Tom fought so sporadically, that he never was able to make a living off it and train full time. For most of his career, he'd only have a few weeks to get prepared for a fight. He wasn't training the rest of the time, he was working to support himself.

Tom from 96-97, I think that guy would crush the Brock of right now. Erikson had proven KO power in his hands, was a better wrestler, and moved with more agility in the cage than Brock has shown. He double leg was very, very fast for a man of his size.

Oh yeah, he was also 6'4 and 280lbs.

Tom got into the game too late in his career......

You mean the guy who couldn't do anything at all to natural 185lber Bustamante over 40 minutes?

Lesnar just broke down and destroyed Mir on the ground with zero problems, and he KOed five-time UFC champion Randy Couture in the fight before that. IMO that's just a bit more impressive than beating Willie Peeters or Pantera Negra.

Erikson had proven KO power in his hands

LOL, Brock doesn't have powerful punches?

Bullshit. Lesnar is easily the fastest and most explosive fighter in MMA history at his weight. Do you think Erikson could make an NFL practice squad with zero football experience like Brock did?

Oh yeah, he was also 6'4 and 280lbs.

He's 6'3", the same as Brock. The only difference is that Brock cuts to make the 265 weight limit and doesn't walk around with the "bear"-type physique Erikson does, not that there's anything wrong with that. ;)

Wow, I didn't Brock's guard game was as tight as Bustamante.

Wow, Brock beat up a 45 year old man coming off a year long layoff. Not to mention the most over rated in MMA history, a man who hasn't won more than two fights in a row in 10 years, and made a career of cherry picking his fights for wins, and losing immediately after when facing top talent he didn't get to select.

"LOL, Brock doesn't have powerful punches?"

How is this even a fucking reply? Who was talking about Brock? Erikson put people to sleep before, meaning he can hit hard. Thats it. You reply was senseless.

"Bullshit. Lesnar is easily the fastest and most explosive fighter in MMA history at his weight. Do you think Erikson could make an NFL practice squad with zero football experience like Brock did?"

What does that have to do with a fight? Think man, fucking think, before you type. Can Lesnar shoot a double leg as fast as Erikson from his early career could? Answer:Nope. Was Brock as good a wrestler as Erikson? Answer:Nope again.

Pretty much all irrelevant to any real discussion. Tom is closer to 6'4 than 6'3, by the way.

There was a complete difference to the NHB days of MMA to todays that Brock had the opportunity of Seeing a Tom Erickson to learn from his mistakes. If Tom Erickson was able to fly in blackbelts and have the same training camps Lesnar had he would have rolled through everyone just the same he is an elite level wrestler and a mean tough SOB. That being said, he is in indiana coaching college, making a living, and not training consitantly, many of his fights consisted of a call a on monday with a plane ticket for thursday, weighins friday, fight saturday. All he had was tuesday to spar Gary Goodridge if he could make the drive down, and Wednesday hit the bag in the Rec center for a few minutes.

Another Badass I wish would have fought in their primes is Brocks personal coach Marty Morgan.... He comes from one of the toughest families alive, brothers are wrold team members and olympians, all american wrestlers, USA greco team members, father was a World Champion Boxer and several brothers were contendors....tough family
