Brown belts have to register with IBJJF?

Heard a rumor that for 2012 that all brown belts have to register with the IBJJF similar to Blackbelts.

Anyone know anything about this? Phone Post

I only think it would be a problem if you aren't a brown belt. Good for the IBJJF for trying to keep the integrity of BJJ belt rankings Phone Post

Oh I don't have any complaints. I just haven't found anything official. I want to compete in February and want to make sure I'm able too. Phone Post

I also heard that they will no longer allow rip stop gi pants, but I haven't seen anything on that either.

Also the White gi, blue gi not going into effect til next year...correct?

Pretty sure that rule will only be for Blackbelts. Phone Post

I believe that everyone will have to register with the federation as of the first of the year (2012) in order to compete at IBJJF events. That was the last word I heard (I was told that at the Mundials this year).

I registered last week (paid) to make sure I had plenty of time to work out any problems before the Pan Ams. Once I entered my information and paid I got an email with a form attatched that had the information I entered on it and just needed to be signed by me and my instructor and sent back (along with a copy of a picture). It said that you can mail it to them or email it back. Once I actually print it out and get it signed I am just going to scan it back in and email it with a picture. It said that once it is received (by email or by mail) they will email you a membership number that you can use when you register for tournaments until the card arrives.

So basically if you sign up, print out the form, have it signed, then email it with a copy of a picture you can get your code within a day or two (though possibly more) and you're set to register for any tournaments you want.

If I actually remember to print mine out and get it signed tonight I will keep you posted on the rest of the process so you know what to expect.

The ripstop or the White, blue gi?

Cool. More regulations. That's what will make the sport better Phone Post

Alliance PA, do you have a link to the registration page? Phone Post

What a pain in the ass. Thanks for the information though! Very helpful.

Lame.

What a waste... i hate the ibjjf. Tournaments cost far too much to compete in, and now they add this to stick it to those of us that have been in the sport the longest. Add this to their rediculous uniform requirements that are unclearly defined and periodically force you to buy new gis at thier tournaments and you could be looking at close to 300 bucks just to compete in one tournament per year. Why do we put up with this shit? Phone Post

Lack of better options, I guess.

They are such pricks. Don't they want the sport grow. More competitors more money, right? This clearly isn't helping bring in more competitors.

I considered competing at both the pans and worlds in 2012. Now this and the gi requirements...who knows...maybe i'll use the money and go on vacation. Phone Post

I like it. I had to as a black belt anyway. Its not hard and only takes minimal effort. Phone Post

BJJ1553 is the constant defender of IBJJF. He also hates 99% of all the people in BJJ.

I'm all for making people register under a credited academy and instructor to verify rank. That said it's just another cash grab. Renewing them each year is extreme. This should coat about $10. Not $35 then 30 every year after, no telling what else is required. Phone Post

How does this improve competition? Phone Post

They also have to register their hands as lethal weapons

This doesn't seem like it's to "stick it" to anyone. Seems like the IBJJF is just going to eventually do this with all blue, purple, brown and black belts, and they are starting from the top down.

I don't understand what you mean by "unclear uniform definitions". The rules are clearly stated on their website. Seem pretty straight forward to me.

They don't force anyone to buy new gi's at their tournaments...if you're buying a new gi there its either because you want to, or you didn't read the rules clearly before you showed up to compete. That's your problem and responsibility, not the IBJJF's

I think it's good to have everyone registered in a database. If you're legit, then what's the concern? Too many fakers and mcdojos out there now. With the popularity of BJJ, this is something that needs to happen.

I've seen one guy get forced to buy a new belt because his wasn't the right shade of purple. That's some sorry shit. You know calls on uniforms are completely at an official's discrestion, and the stuff that is especially shady are the rules about sleeve width through the triceps and shoulders. I have no problem with a regulating body making people register to compete, like what happens in judo, but judo players aren't paying an arm and a leg to compete like we are either. Add travel and lodging expenses and what would rather do, go home or shell out another 120 bucks because your gi was a little too tight through the shoulders. Phone Post
