Burton's "Choke Em Out" review

CBK - how were they?
Please review!

I'm sure you're fired from your job by now, so you have enough free time - lets hear it!

Sorry guys... I will post a review soon. My initial impressions, after
having watched DVD 1 of both sets, is that they are beautifully
produced. This is definitely not seminar footage shot on someone's
miniDV camcorder. BTW, my review, when it is posted, will be credible
for two reasons:

1. I have never met Burton

2. I have every reason to hate him as he lives in beautiful Hawaii and I
live in Canada:)

lol, very true

Hate me if you will, but I'm staying here in Honolulu! I look forward to hearing your thoughts. Aloha!

Choke em out - Burton Richardson

Video Review

DVD 1 (of 2)

Introduction

Burton begins by explaining the difference between using pain
compliance and chokes to finish fights. He also demonstrates a
comparison of face locks and chokes.
From there he shows the basics of the rear naked choke and
demonstrates control while standing and from back mount.

Next Burton moves onto entries (how to establish back mount
position).

1. from mount - Burton explains the concept of getting past the
opponent's elbow and shows a couple of methods of accomplishing
this. He also shows details on setting hooks when your opponent rolls.
He also explains the idea of setting the choke right away (during the
transition), before your opponent has a chance to mount a defense.

2. from front headlock (head and arm). I like the detail that Burton
shows for this transition.

3. from knee mount

4. from north south

5. from standing guard pass (this one looks fancy. I will have to play
with it.

6. double under pass (Burton shows an interesting detail of controlling
your opponent's arm from the transition to the back mount).

At this point Burton shows the concept (and methods) of how to trap
one of your opponent's arms when in back mount and why this is
advantageous.

Now he moves on to entries from from guard - again the concept of
getting past the opponent's elbow

7. from arm drag

8. from failed kimura

9. from armbar

10. from underhook (half guard) Burton shows details on how to
prevent whizzer counter

Next the video moves onto Counters/escapes from back mount/rear
naked choke.

DVD conclusion

As expected, Burton emphasizes necessity getting on the mat and
training these skills and the importance of training with resistance. The
video ends with a bit of footage of students training with resistance/
sparring.

Disk 2 (of 2)

Burton begins this DVD with the Basics of Collar chokes (to be applied
when opponent is wearing a jacket). He goes on to explain the concept
of finishing the fight standing with the choke instead of going to the
ground.

Then he goes on to teach various collar chokes from several positions.
This includes:

1. Collar chokes from the guard: palm up/palm down, whizzer choke

He consistently talks about protecting yourself from your opponent's
strikes while applying these chokes.

2. quarter position top: clock choke

3. knee-mount: baseball choke

4. side mount: single wing choke

5. Burton then demonstrates the "duck under" choke (my name for it,
not his). He explains that it is perhaps "fancy" and not really a "street"
technique.

6. back mount: basic collar choke

Burton now explains how chokes can set up other attacks and then
goes on to show several examples of this.

Next, Burton moves onto the triangle choke from the guard. He begins
with the basic mechanics and then moves on to show several important
details on how to finish the triangle. (Note: although the triangle choke
is one of my primary finishes and I think I have a fairly decent grasp of
this skill, I saw a couple of details that I feel will help me out a lot).

Following this, Burton shows numerous triangle choke entries from the
guard. He also shows several entries from other positions: side control
bottom, quarter position bottom, side control top (he does explain the
risks of giving up top position to go for the triangle), mount, arm-lock
"catch" position.

The triangle portion of the DVD ends with counters to common triangle
choke counters.

Next is the 10 finger (head and arm) guillotine.
Burton explains how the idea of having the arm inside used to be
considered a counter. But by having the arm trapped, it is preventing
the common arm-over-the-shoulder counter to the basic guillotine.
Burton goes over the details in how to finish this choke and how it
differs from the basic guillotine. He then moves onto entries into it.

He finishes the DVD by quickly showing a "whole bunch" of various
chokes, from various positions. With each choke he explains the key
points to finishing the submission.

Overall impressions: The series has excellent production quality with
good content, instruction and details shown. The series includes a lot
of material covering high-percentage chokes from virtually every
position. Buy it!

Thanks again Mike,
That takes a lot of effort to write such a detailed review. I appreciate your endorsement. Aloha!

You are welcome, Burton. Thank you for producing these, and your
Science of the fight DVDs.

Burton's stuff is always high quality. I have his old Unique stuff, plus all of his SBGi stuff. He is very articulate, intelligent and can get his point across even to someone who is 37 with two left feet like me.

A friend let me borrow Burton's new series and I like it! Especially his Choke series.
