Calgary Fighters-Where do u train?

Just wondering where all the mma fighters in Calgary train. Thanks

Canuckles, BDB, Gold's gym, Dynamics martial arts, Anderson's BJJ at Gold's. hummmm???

what else..... Hamzeh's house of russian techs.

thats it.

I think

are u looking for a place to train mitts?

Beaumeister,

I may be moving to Calgary in the next year and would like to give MMA competition a try. I've only competed in muay thai and boxing so far. Ideally I would like to train in a place with an active MMA team. I know lots of guys compete from Canuckles, and BDB has Nick Ring, but that's all I really know about the Calgary scene. Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

Jay Percival

I've watched you fight, Jay. Your pretty slick.

BDB and Canuckles probably have the highest output of MMA fighters.

But their are some decent Jiujitsu and muay thai schools around.Calgary has 2 bjj black belts and Mike miles(5 gyms).

Who are the black belts in Calgary??

Josh Russel and Anderson Goncalves

Hey Jay,
Thats awsome that you re getting into the MMA.
When people ask who's got some real MT tech. You're name always comes up. You have a great style my friend.

I think Jay knows to stay away from Mike miles.
Jay's style isn't exactly Mike's TKD/muaythai
I also clearly remeber the days Mike did everything he could to destroy mma in calgary. Figure he could beat it, he started advertising mma classes.

A guy with your striking back ground. I'd say see Anderson, get your ground up.

Drop me a line when you get a chance. I have a few friends who can help you out.

Thanks for the info everyone, and the kind words Masterdebater and Spicythaichilly.

I think if I want to do mma I'm going to have to train with others who compete so BDB and Canuckles sound like great options. I'd love to train standup with Mike Miles but for mma I know you have to work with people that put it together with the takedowns and the groundwork. Working pure BJJ with blackbelt instructors can only help too, so it sounds like there's some great options.

Moving to Calgary isn't for sure but I want to know what my options are. I'm training at the Legacy Gym in Thailand right now and it's pretty bad ass. Check it out if you get the chance-www.legacygym.com.

hey Jay, cool stuff.
I was at Legacy this year for a few months. Ole was trainning for Genki at the time.

heading back in a few weeks. How long you staying for ?

Fack I'd like to see how crazy he's training for this one.

Say hi to Phut and Ole from Sylvie and Francois

Jay... Josh Russel at Gracie Barra is another good option for BJJ ground work. Anderson is very very good as well.

I would think your best bet would be a place specific to the ground game that gives you flexibility in cross training elsewhere, and gives you a good/responsible/realistic timeline in getting fights.

as far as grapling goes, if you are looking for a good gym to train @, you should visit Alex & the crew at the BJJFight club. (bjjfightclub.com) I am also looking at doing some mma in the near future & I have found just in the last couple of months since I moved out here, that my BJJ has greatly improved. We've got a really strong group here so you should definately drop in & check everything out when you get here...

Beau

Thanks for all the info guys.

Spicythai, I'll tell Phut and Ole that you and Sylvie say hello. Hope to see you in Ubon, I'm here till the end of December.

Jay

"BDB and Canuckles probably have the highest output of MMA fighters. "

I am not sure about Canuckles, but BDB has trained fighters to international level. You could probably go international from there as well.

I have heard about Canuckles, they are supposed to be good too. I think Alex at BJJ Fightclub is a good club as well, although I do not know if these 2 have had any fighters go international or not. I think they have some local pro fighters though.

Just try a few clubs out and see where you fit best.

"Just try a few clubs out and see where you fit best."

Shooter is correct. Most, if not all, these clubs offer free trial periods. Everyone here is going to promote there own club, rightfully so, and the free trial period allows you to check them out for yourself.

You probably already know this but I'll mention it anyway: Check out the quality of training partners at each gym. That is at least as important as the quality of the intructor(s).
