Camera Surveillance Man - People freak out!

Many of you probably have seen this before. But if you haven't, it's pretty amazing, the guy takes a camera and just films people without saying much. People's reactions are pretty interesting.

Love this guys videos lol.  He was banned from YouTube for a little while

I guess you could say there is some value in this for people he films because it makes it clear to them what their right are and are not in terms of being surveilled, and highlights that we are often on video even when we don't notice. But I am curious about the details of the law. I've heard it is illegal to record someone who doesn't know they are being recorded. Is that true, and if so, wouldn't each of these people have a legal right to complain based on the time between when he started recording them and the time they noticed or were told they were being recorded? How about anyone on the phone with someone else? Wouldn' the person on the other like who is not present need to be notified?
