I was informed that a BJJ Black Belt can promote others to Black Belt without a higher rank present only when he/she has 2 stripes on the belt. Correct?
When I was awarded my 3rd degree I told that now I can promote black beltes.
But,people will do what they want.
I think that the IBJJF is having BBs register to address this issue.
There was a video of Leo Viera talking about this. He feels a certain amount of years as a black belt before a bb can start promoting.
I have always heard it was 2nd Degree to promote someone "by the book" to Black Belt.
In theory you gotta have a few stripes. In actuality, it differs from instructor to instructor and association to association. And the IBJJF is DEFINITELY not the final ruling on things as the only thing they care about is $$$$.
Rule of thumb even in judo is you can promote up to 2 levels below your rank. This follows what RBloom has said. In judo to promote to 1st degree black belt you would have to be a 3rd degree black belt.
You shouldn't be able to promote somebody to be equal to yourself.
This is the vid Tek was referring to I'm assuming:

"For give black belt have to get tree stripes"
I think for all other belts you have to be just one above and you can't promote to your own rank. A brown can promote blue to purple but not purple to brown.
This is all under IBJJF AFAIK
after black all the stripes mean is years of time. it is not a marking of ability or knowledge, you get them just by continuing to train and being black belt...(oh, and paying your money to ibjjf for membership and ref course)
from the ibjjf.org website:
3. You may request your 1st degree after 3 years as a black belt. In order to do so it is required that you have renewed your IBJJF membership card every year during the period, have gone through a first aid course and be approved in the referee course over the previous 12 months.
4. You may request your 2nd or 3rd degrees 3 years after being awarded the previous degree. It is required that you have renewed your IBJJF membership card every year during the period, have gone through a first aid course and be approved in the referee course over the previous 12 months"
^^talk about taking $$$ for rank

Except in Judo the ranking is a little different in that Black Belt/Shodan is 1st degree Black Belt, whereas in BJJ "1st degree Black Belt" happens about 3 years AFTER you receive your Black Belt
Thanks Shen, I know at our local BJJ club there are 5 Blackbelts not the fact 1st degree happens about 3 years after you get your BB. But their are some similarites for who can promote to whom. For example I am Nidan(2nd degree BB judo) and I can promote from brown 2nd degree to brown first degree (highest brown), but I cannot promote from Brown 1st degree to Black(Shodan) 1st degree unless I get my Sandan (3rd degree). Thanks,
jeff higgs did
Generally yes. But there are plenty of legit long time black belts that don't rock any stripes at all. Two I can think of are Ricco Rodriguez and I also think BJ Penn.
Ricco got his black belt about 3years ago? If anything, he should be getting his first stripe soon. I don't think he cares, though.
well there are plenty of guys in the US and ESP Brazil that have no stripes but have been black belts for a decade or more. And they have made black belts, so it reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaly varies. And that rule the IBJJF has now is different then previous federations too, so most guys just do whatever for better or worse (and esp w the new fees you must pay to the org for that shit).
I will ask Ricco when he got it today. But I am pretty damn sure it's been more than three years.
I actually just got my little 1st degree stripe a couple weeks back. It was kind of a funny "promotion". Andre insists on telling our teacher I'm due (He already got his stripe a while earlier). My teacher was annoyed with me that I hadn't mentioned it to him and trudges over to his desk and rips off a piece of athletic tape, trudges back saying: "Porra, I can't believe you don't tell me. I TOLD you to tell me". Then gives a quick bow/hug and yells at the class that is milling around to line up. (This was during a visiting professor's seminar). The whole thing took about 15-seconds and I don't think anyone in the entire school noticed except maybe Andre.
So low-key, I actually kinda liked it.
Forrest griffin just got promoted by a no striper and nobody made a fuss
