Can Anyone Top This Rivalry Story? Crazy Stuff

What a difference a few years and some rules can make. Before the state of Wisconsin began regulating the sport of mixed martial arts in 2010, organizations were free to match any two opponents they deemed fit. And while fair matchmaking and professional policies were normally followed, exceptions were made for the sake of ticket sales.

One of these "Wild West" type of matchups occurred in October of 2009 as the notorious Terry Kleiman squared off against Todd Olsen at Cage Conflict Championships 3 "Halloween Brawl". The grotesquely mismatched brawl was chalked full of controversy before, during, and after the fight came to its conclusion.

This story isn't for the squeamish nor is it meant to shed a bad light on the sport. Instead, it is being retold in order to prove how far mixed martial arts has come in terms of professionalism and global acceptance in such a short period of time. Enjoy.

In November of 2008 a horrible scene unfolded within the City of Green Bay. Following a failed relationship with Wisconsin super heavyweight fighter Kleiman, Alex Rouse returned home to find her five-month-old Pekingese burned to death in her oven. The full police reports can be found via the Green Bay Press Gazette.

What ultimately resulted from the horrendous situation was Kleiman being sentenced to six years in prison for burglary and mistreatment of an animal causing death. But in the 16-months between the original arrest and sentencing, Kleiman found his way into the cage against one of Rouse's family members.

Before his arrest, Kleiman had been pegged to square off against Paul "Big Papi" Martinez for the Gladiators Cage Fighting super heavyweight championship in Milwaukee at the "Clash of Titans"y. But immediately after news of the arrest broke, promoter Duke Roufus issued a press release announcing that Kleiman was off of the card. One could only imagine what the cop vs. convict matchup could have held.

With his title fight canceled and life on hold, Kleiman stayed inactive within the MMA scene for a few months. But that all changed when he agreed to face his former girlfriend's relative Todd Olsen in the "Halloween Brawl" main event at Tanner's Bar & Grill in Kimberly, Wisconsin. Olsen was making his first return to the cage in over six years.

From all accounts the aptly labeled "David vs. Goliath" matchup was an absolute disaster. The weight difference between the two was reportedly well over 100-pounds, the true-life vendetta between the two so volatile it could have been classified as comical, and the atmosphere in the arena was described by one witness as "the craziest thing I've ever seen in MMA." The action in the cage was just as ridiculous.

Equipped with a weight advantage that would make Emanuel Yarbrough blush, Kleiman was able to work the fight to the mat and deliver a brutal display of ground-and-pound causing referee Chris Barrera to call a halt to the action just over three minutes into round one. But the fight had just begun.

Filled with rage, Kleiman refused to stop pummeling Olsen as Barrera attempted to stop the action. With Kleiman's immense size totaling well over 400-pounds, Barrera was unable to halt Kleiman's strikes causing a riot in the building. Fans and enraged family members exploded over the walls of the cage in an attempt to break up the action.

When all was said and done Kleiman's victory was ruled to a No Contest. Neither man ever officially competed again within the sport and both have been largely forgotten. The most intense feud ever to culminate within Wisconsin's MMA scene is a great reminder as to where the sport once stood and how far it has evolved in just a matter of years.

I remember then this went down. I heard everything up to where Duke kicked him off the show. The last part I never heard about before. What a piece of shit.
