Can I Cut weight now?

I have not worked out consistantly for a while now, so currently I am at:

5'10, about 165-170lbs, 33 inch waist.

According to some trainer, I am around 14% bf.

so my muscle weight is about 145lbs(?)

Anyway, I heard from some guy that my lean muscle mass is too low to really cut weight.

He said that at my weight, I "lack the muscle mass to get really lean."

He recommends I bulk up before I even think about cutting.

But I feel my waist is way too big right now, most of my pants dont even fit.

So is he correct? Am I too light to start cutting effectively?

You can cut, it will just take longer.

So he is correct?

How much lean body should a person have before they should start cutting?

Since it sounds like my 145lbs is a bit too little

Thanks

I'm assuming that you're talking about cutting to get lean and lose fat rather than cutting for a competition. It depends on what your aim is, but if it's purely aesthetic wise, a guy 5'10 should be at least 200 lbs. (more around the range of 220) before thinking about cutting.

"I'm assuming that you're talking about cutting to get lean and lose fat rather than cutting for a competition."

You are correct. I meant "cut" as in "cut cycle" (opposite of Bulking phase)

"if it's purely aesthetic wise, a guy 5'10 should be at least 200 lbs. (more around the range of 220) before thinking about cutting. "

Really? That much?

lean mass refers to fat free mass. Really lean would mean lack of fat tissue (from physique standpoint minimal extracellular fluid as well)

i dont see why you could not cut weight. He probably meant you would not appear to be real muscular if you cut wt.

Maybe what he means is, that:

If you have a higher overall weight (even if bf% is the same) and you lose weight, then more of the weight lost will be fat?

But if you are lighter to begin with, you would lose more muscle (percentage wise) than if you were heavier? (even with the same bf%)

jkd-guy:

I'd go ahead and "cut." I wouldn't listen to most people who give you the "bulk up then cut up" type of advice, as that's a bit on the bodybuilding side, therefore not necessarily true for your average MMA athlete/martial artist.

I think you can do it.
