So of course if you work at any guard no matter size you'll most likely work it out. But different body sizes offer better advantages/shorter learning curve per body type. Here's what I've found
Short guys/stubby legs: X, 1leg X, butterfly, deep half
Lanky guys : DLR, Spider, closed, inverted
Big guys : half, DLR, closed
Thoughts?
I'm 5'5" & agree
Had the same convo just tonight. A lot of our small guys love Butterfly and Deep half. We also talked how Keenan loves his lapel game so much and how well his game works due to his size.
I observed that a lot of my shorter guys even the beginners instinctivly go for half guard. I taught them a few of Eddies typical moves like lockdown, oldschool and electric chair and they can use it much better than tal guys.....
Relatively short, so half and butterfly for me.
Robobear -You play a lot of OLX from butterfly? I feel like it's always right there
Relatively short, so half and butterfly for me.

5'10" 235 lbs here, half guard and closed guard for me too, also stemming attacks off the kimura grip.
6'2, 260. Butterfly only for me and some closed.
I have short legs.
5'6" 135 I play a lot of lasso, spider and DLR. I find I can keep a ton of weight off me with these.
5ft 7 - 150 lbs purple belt. My main guards would have to be DLR and x guard. Although after knee surgery I've started to play a lot of half/deep half and and shin to shin. Wish I could play SLX but my knee can't take that much weight at the moment
Don't play any spider at all.
5'8" 183lbs I play it all (minus inverted) depending on my opponent/training partner. Smaller guys, closed guard. Bigger guys, half guard. White belts, DLR, spider, combos and experimenting.
My professor is about 6'0 200 and his butterfly/open guard is sick
Im 5'9ish, but my inseam is short 29in and thick legs. Closed because 5hat is where my arthritic hip is strongest and braced.
Rock the Gaspare -Robobear -You play a lot of OLX from butterfly? I feel like it's always right there
Relatively short, so half and butterfly for me.
I wish. I'd like to but I'm 5'7" 200 and some of my regular partners are like in the upper 200's into the 3's, so my one leg wouldn't handle. I like to try and take the back or get up from butterfly or switch to a knee shield half and try and do the same.
I'm 5'6" and don't play butterfly at all. In fact, I struggle to use any kind of hooks, either from traditional butterfly, or from half guard. I struggle with X-guard too, I feel that I don't have the leg strength to use these positions effectively.
James
big feet = unpassable butterfly guard
short, light, not stocky at all... I don't think there is a prototypical guard for someone like me.
Generally it's about not letting them get grips specifically on my legs and not stagnating allowing them to gradually improve their position....
closed guard (if I can close the legs)
double sleeve dlr, spider, situp...maybe sleeve and collar if my foot can dominate their other bicep
6'4 and 175. Play butterfly, single leg x, and full x guard Marcelo style.
The second best butterfly guard player in BJJ history (IMO) is like 6'2 (Leo Santos). I don't buy into this guard for body shape stuff.
Muffinho, I don't think it's just "this" type for any body shape. Maybe something more common that's usual for distinct body types. I agree with the OP, but I also dabble in lasso, spider, dlh, open depending on situation
I'm short with short legs, play spider, dlr, lasso, rdlr and invert
Have fun
