Who your ref is?
Is there any way to argue that?

I don't know that you can. I distinctly remember Spratt being upset finding out that Herb Dean would be his ref for his Ryan Ford fight...
I doubt it. But I am sure you could put in a reqeust for a ref change?
Beeno - I don't know that you can. I distinctly remember Spratt being upset finding out that Herb Dean would be his ref for his Ryan Ford fight...
There would have to be a way to reject that type of decision. Realistically it could be a career shaping issue.
hankhill - boxers negotiate the refs AND judgers all the time.
So athletic commissions allow it?
Negotiating it is one thing. Refusing to honor your contract and spitting in the commission's face is another.
But if the ref in question is introduced after your contract is validated it wouldn't be something forseen, would it?
I think it's diff for MMA.
Boxers negotiate each individual fight, MMA contracts are for X fights total, I don't think there's any stipulation on when, where, and who they are against as they are in boxing.
Boxing contract would be like, Mayweather vs. DLH in Vegas on December 5th, referee = blah blah blah.
Don't think MMA fighters can do that unless it's in the bout agreements, which if what we say on Randy's was all there is in those, doesn't show up.
Hasn't BJM said that the commissions just assign refs randomly the day of the fights?
You can bring it up upfront. Once the referee is assigned by the commission, you really are fighting a losing battle.
The commission has the ability to take away your license to fight, and it will be honored by other commissions nationwide.
"Hasn't BJM said that the commissions just assign refs randomly the day of the fights?"
They may assign them the day of the fights, but they can and do make special assigments. Further, the commissions line up the 3 or 4 referees who are going to be on a particular card ahead of time.
I don't think so.
hankhill - ^ true. negotiation for refs and judges has to happen during contrat talks. if you dont have the clout or the forsight to do it then tuff shit for you.
My understanding from the many boxers I deal with, this includes the like of B-Hop is that these are only negotiated for title bouts, any undercard event or non title bout you get what you get.
oh and 1001 posts whoot!!!
Problem you run into in the smaller orgs, ESPECIALLY in Kansas City is that the promoter/matchmaker is the coach of the big names locally, so he sets the fights his guy can win. Then the ref is also a member of the school (even if they are registered with a sanctioning body, they will choose school ties over anything else). So you are going into the match with the deck stacked against you.
If you start to get the upper hand, the ref steps in to "see if your opponent can continue" and gives him time to recover. Seen it for years and years now.
YOU SHOULD be able to request your ref but with "sanctioning bodies" the refs are probably still from the same school or have strong ties with them.
ttt
OmegaPoon - Tito requested a particular ref for his 3rd fight with Ken i think.
The ref in my last fight told me to stand up just as I was passing guard into full mount. I looked up and said "are you serious?" He still made us stand. Later in the fight I had a single leg and was down on both knees and my opponent kneed me in the head almost ko'ing me and the ref didnt say shit!!! I am going to protest as soon as I get a copy of the fight!!!!
you'll never see a copy of that fight haha.
Kansas City is FAMOUS for that exact type of shit. IF you can dispute it, the videos DISAPPEAR
Maybe just ask to have it written in your contract that "so and so" wont ref your fight. Handle it before the fact
put it into the contract... i.e. Dan M. is NOT the referee of ANY fights involving Fighter X, etc...
I had cecil peoples!!
I got deducted a point for some BS upkick foul that hit the chest first and barely touched my opponets face, no damage done.
fight ended in a draw instead of a win for me....BS!!!!
