Can you survive NYC on 57K?

Got a job offer in NYC. Anywhere else in the country I'd jump at it, but I know this is more like making 40K most places.

Is it gonna be worth it with the networking opportunities and shit, or am I going to be hunting down rats in my apartment for sustenance?

I'm sure it depends. Manhattan?

Regardless, rats. Phone Post 3.0

The job is in Manhattan, but will also involve going to a lot of clients.

I'm pretty sure the firm will pay for most travel expenses though. Not sure about the normal commute.

Your daily commute is going to suck from New Jersey or Long Island. Sleep is overrated.

You can if your ok with living 35-40 minutes from manhattan Phone Post 3.0

Any advice on places to live?

Where do you suggest?

Uh, not from experience. We have plenty of New Yorkers here who can give you much better advice than I.

I've heard Bergen Co. NJ and Western Long Island. Since your job is requiring travel, are they expecting you to use your own car? If you have one, you probably should not commute with it unless your job pays for your parking. It can cost upwards of 1-2k+ a month to park a car in the city.

You will need roommates. You cannot realistically live in Manhattan, but it is possible.

Your location entirely depends on how you'll commute, and where to. Forest hills, Sunnyside, lic, astoria, bushwick, and western Nassau are all arguable decent choices, depending on how you travel.

I think all of the clients are within the city, various parts of Manhattan.

Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it.

Brooklyn or queens. But not the cool parts. Im not sure about queens but in brooklyn you can find a studio or 1br for 9-1200 in places like bay ridge, bensonhurst, gravesend even sunset park. But like i said the train ride is long. You would probably be a lot closer in queens tho especially if your going to work in midtown Phone Post 3.0

Yeah you can get your own place at 57K.  Just not in the trendiest of areas.  I found a deal in Astoria for $1,200 for a one bedroom on my own, and I have never made that much in my life.  These deals in neighborhoods like this are out there, but tough to find.  There are plenty of places you can live though, despite what people will tell you or their perception is.

Thanks for the advice.

Astoria looks nice.

The job is literally a 2 minute walk from Grand Central is that helps with the commute possibilities.

I was told there is a specific rail line that runs into Grand Central that makes certain neighborhoods easier to commute from.

Only example I have to offer is that I live in Toronto, the heart of DT. Takes like 10 minutes to walk to work at the Canadian Wall Street (Bay Street).

My rent is about $1,600 for a decent 1 bedroom in a nice condo.

A girl I know in Manhattan lives in a 2 bedroom converted into a 3 bedroom with 2 roommates. Her room is the converted living room and her share of the rent is $1,700.

Insane.

Commute or live with a lot of people is my advice from afar. Phone Post 3.0

lol no

You certainly can.
What other expenses will you have?
Unlimited metro is $120 a month, I think.
Gas/electric
Cable? Or just internet?
Cell phone?
Keep in mind there's city tax on income as well as state and federal. Phone Post 3.0

Roommates is key Phone Post 3.0

Student loans, internet, utilities probably.

The company will pay for my cell phone, not sure if they'll give me a metro card. From what I understand clients are constantly feeding people since they spend so much time there, so I guess there's that lol.

Isn't Bushwick kinda a dump? My Mom grew up there in the 60s to 80s said it was not a good area by any means Phone Post 3.0
