Can you train to take punches?

You learn how to roll with punches and get psychologically used to them by sparring, and build up your neck muscles and tendons while training in general, so yes. On the other hand, no amount of training is gonna come close to turning a normal dude into Mark Hunt or Fujita.

What about those jukokai/combat ki guys? I don't remember seeing any full force punches to the jaw/face - but some of their feats seem impressive. Here's Genki Sudo getting his shots in with no effect - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhUGKsfklHQ

This thread fucking rocks

good thread

there is no such thing as a glass jaw, only pencil necks. - unknown

if you work on neck strength and put a rope through a 20 lb weight and bite the rope lifting it with your jaw you can develop muscles that will keep your jaw in place when punched and your head from moving too much. This will, in turn, make you harder to knock out. Basiclly, it comes down to how strong your neck is and how those muscles absorb force rather than transfering that force to the skull which in turn transfers the impact to the brain as it crashes into the skull. bridging and thai clinch work are the answer. Just ask Franca and Sherk.

I was about to post what Conor said.. The old rope and jaw trick.

Something we do that helps your brain recover is spin drills. You basically spin around and around till your dizzy then try to stand and spar. After doing this awhile your brain adjusts quicker and you dont stumble around looking for your feet.Very funny drill to do, everybody gets a kick out of it esp the first timers, its amazing how many guys fall down after only a few spins.

YES you can train to strengthen your jaw. Boxers chew gum to build up the jaw muscles.

Strong neck = has little to do with getting koéd.. The thai train there neck everyday of there life. And they get koed... Hell guys like randleman, wanderlei, lebanner, coleman.. have huge necks and still get koéd.

Relaxation levels really help your chin. If you are very stiff, you're going to sleep. Rolling with the punches, and most importantly seeing them, is the key. I think you can improve your chin, but you are born with a great chin.

Similar to big punching power. Either you have it or you don't. But there are things you can do to make it better.

dutchman -- are you telling be it's a coincidence Hunt's and fujita's necks are the width of tree stumps?

"Strong neck = has little to do with getting ko?d.. The thai train there

it's not full proof but helps in the sense that a strong neck and jaw greatly
reduces the punches effect.

additionally, the guys you listed were all ko'd by monster hits.

a strong neck & jaw help, but overall ability to see punches, roll with them
& evade are still the key to not getting ko'd.

Build up your neck, develop excellent endurance, keep your chin down and shoulders forward, and spar.
