Patrick Stewart: New Star Trek Show a 'Response to Brexit and Trump'
Patrick Stewart returns to Star Trek and the role of Jean-Luc Picard in a new CBS streaming show, but the reason it exists at all is, unsurprisingly, political. The liberal actor told Variety this week that Picard is "me responding to the world of Brexit and Trump." He also said that the United States (under Trump) and Britain (under Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson) are "completely fucked."
In a way, the world of 'Next Generation' had been too perfect and too protected," he says. "It was the Enterprise. It was a safe world of respect and communication and care and, sometimes, fun." In "Picard," the Federation -- a union of planets bonded by shared democratic values -- has taken an isolationist turn. The new show, Stewart says, "was me responding to the world of Brexit and Trump and feeling, 'Why hasn't the Federation changed? Why hasn't Starfleet changed?' Maybe they're not as reliable and trustworthy as we all thought."
I don’t give a shit what Patrick Stewart thinks. As long as the show is good, I will watch it.
They said the same shit when Star Trek Discovery came out and it was all much ado about nothing. They claimed the Klingons represented Trump and the Deplorables, yet when the show came out, they portrayed the Klingons the same way every show since Next Generation has portrayed them, as a noble culture of warriors who are stubborn as hell and difficult to get along with, but are fundamentally decent.
I suspect this show will be the same. Stewart will flap his gums in press junkets, but when the show comes out, it will be standard Star Trek fare. DS9, Enterprise and Discovery have already delved pretty deeply into the shady shit the Federation has done in order to protect their expansionist aims. The episodes that explore seedy underbelly of the Federation are some of my favorites, so if Picard goes there early and often, I’ll probably be a happy camper.
Don't give a shit, still checking it out. I remember how superwoke Discovery was supposed to be and that turned out just fine.
That show is unwatchable. There is no one to like in it and the writing team has lost its damn mind.
Jason Isaacs was fantastic as Captain Lorca, and Ansel Mount does an excellent job as Captain Pike. Doug Jones is also great as Saru. The only major problem I have with the series is that it revolves around the worst character in the cast (Michael). If they centered it on the Captains, like all other Trek shows, it would be MUCH better.
