A bout between Carlos Condit (26-5 MMA, 3-1 UFC) and unbeaten Dong Hyun Kim (14-0-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) has taken a spot on July's UFC 132 card - a spot that likely opened with the recent scratch of a B.J. Penn vs. Jon Fitch co-headliner.
UFC officials today announced the welterweight fight.
UFC 132 takes place July 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
The night's main card, including a championship headliner between bantamweight titleholder Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber, airs live on pay-per-view. Condit vs. Kim is part of the televised card.
When Fitch was forced off the card due to an injury, Condit was a leading candidate to fill in. But as MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) first reported Thursday, Penn also recently was pulled from the card.
Condit, the former WEC welterweight champ, looks for his fourth straight win in the UFC. After opening his promotional career with a close split-decision defeat to Martin Kampmann, the Greg Jackson-trained fighter has picked up a decision win over Jake Ellenberger and knockout victories over Rory MacDonald and Dan Hardy.
Condit now is 11-1 over his past fights.
Kim, meanwhile, remains undefeated in his MMA and UFC career (though a split-decision loss to Karo Parisyan was overturned and declared a no-contest when the veteran failed a post-fight drug test). Since that early-2009 bout, the South Korean Kim has picked up consecutive decision victories over T.J. Grant, Amir Sadollah and, most recently, Nate Diaz to enter title contention.
LOL @ "dung," as if "dong" hasn't caused enough giggles.
I wonder what the opening line will be on this. Condit should be a heavy favorite, imo.
