Chael: Jones a kid taking on a man, GOAT at stake

One teammate publically backing another to win a big title fight is probably to be expected, but nevertheless Chael Sonnen’s characteristically bombastic declaration that Dan Henderson will defeat UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones at UFC 151 on September 1 has people talking.

Sonnen and “Hendo” have known each other a long time, both being signature members of the famed Team Quest since the 1990s. And “the American Gangster” – who last week announced his own move up to the light heavyweight division – believes his friend will blast his way to yet another big fight victory.

“I believe in Hendo – and so should you,” Sonnen said. “If you look at Jon Jones and think of a man who can beat him, you would think of someone with great KO power, the best chin in the sport because – with his reach – Jones is going to hit you, great wrestling and a relentlessly aggressive style. That man already exists – and his name is Dan Henderson.

The two-time UFC middleweight title challenger went on to state the main event of UFC 151 is nothing less than a fight to determine the identity of the greatest light heavyweight of all time.
Sonnen said: “Here’s the thing people are missing about this fight at UFC 151. Yes, the UFC light heavyweight championship is on the line, but this is about more than who currently holds the UFC 205lbs gold.

“This fight on September 1 is a fight to determine who is the greatest ever light heavyweight. I give Jon Jones his due as a great fighter. He’s beaten some outstanding fighters already and looked impressive each time. He’s already accomplished so much in the sport – just not as much as Dan Henderson.

“Everyone talks about pound-for-pound champions and pound-for-pound achievements. But if you look at what pound-for-pound should mean – who has the ability to beat small fast guys, the ability to knockout big, strong guys, to move through the divisions with your skill-set and win – the only conclusion a rational person would make is Dan Henderson is the pound-for-pound greatest of all time.

“Dan beat the 170lbs champion in Carlos Newton, he’s won the PRIDE 183lbs title, the PRIDE 205lbs title, the STRIKEFORCE 205lbs title, and he’s won the two great tournaments in our sport, the UFC tournament back in the day and the PRIDE Grand Prix. All in all he’s beaten 11 world champions in his career. The man is the best of all time. That is who Jon Jones is facing.

“Jones is a talented kid but he’s taking on a man, and I’d bet on the man any day of the week.”

I believe in Hendo

He's making me believe.

Jones takes it.

Chael's fight hype for his friends is almost as good as it is for his own fights. Gotta love a guy who's that generous with the smack talk.

I'd love to see Hendo get the win, but it doesn't seem likely. Should be a great fight though, that is for sure.

Chael finally making sense based on facts. Interesting. Phone Post

"Chael, I'm going fishing. Can you get on that Tweeter thing and hype up this fight a little?"

I'm a Chael fan, but he typically says Pride fights were rigged. Phone Post

Well he left out being 2-1 vs the two accepted HW GOATS and his record VS HW's, but yea I've held the position that Hendo is the PROVEN P4P goat for reasons he stated.

Yea adding in Hendo's wins VS HW's when he fought as a LHW (and against Fedor when he "drank a ton of water" to make 207), the argument this fight is for the LHW GOAT seems logical too.

Edit: The talk about Newton and 170 IBS is not relevant IMO he won the UFC belt in UFC 17 fighting at the weight of a LHW too.

This board will erupt if Hendo wins.... Phone Post

This is fantastic! So fantastic I can't keep reading without acknowledging the awesome lol

Chael is somehow even more exceptional at promoting his team's fights than he is at his own. I admit to already pulling for Hendo but after reading the full quote I'm just bursting with it. How can you not believe in Henderson with Chael waxing brilliantly in his corner?

These guys aren't fighting for the same thing.

I acknowledge the hyperbole, and if Dan wins it certainly helps cement his legacy as one of, if not THE best ever. But Bones has 17 fights. I'm not calling him the greatest LHW ever, regardless of a win against Hendo, until he has some more fights.

Understood, but you also have to take into account the level of greatness of JBJ's opponents and HOW dominant he was when disposing of them too! I don't know I think Sonnen may be correct.

Only some of them though :) clearly Hendo would never participate in a rigged fight. He doesn't even claim that all of Wanderlei's fights are fixed - most of the time. ^_^

I really hope Henederson wins I will make sure I am awake for the reaction of the UG and make sure i'm a part of the thread

Meh, I'm not saying this is my belief, but one can make a rational argument that a) most of his opponents not being that great and 2) the greats were either past their primes and/or injured/coming off injuries.

Let's look at his UFC record:

Gusmao: Not a great
Bonnar: Not a great, though tough
O'Brien: Not a great
Hamill: Not a great
Vera: Not a great
Matyushenko: Past his prime
Bader: Not a great
Rua: Either past his prime and/or injuries have reduced his ability for continued greatness
Jackson: Past his prime
Machida: Legit great, IMO
Evans: Legit great, IMO

Again, I'm just arguing for fun here. And his dismantling of all of these guys has been exciting and impressive. But if he were to beat Wanderlei now, would we be impressed? Compared to Pride Wandy? Same goes for Pride Rampage, Shogun and Hendo.

Where can I get a "i believe in Hendo" shirt?! Phone Post
