Defending the belt successfully is the only way to build a legacy.
Completely agree... but it does get frustrating
I don't know why I feel the way I do. Look at some of the other fights. Ya get geared up for the "biggest match in UFC history" "the greatest p4p fighter ing UFC history fighting his most difficult oppenent to date" and then he fuckin barely out jabs a fuckin non striker. It just confuses me.
He dropped Jake with a nice high kick and stared at him. Where's the fire? Where's that killer instinct?
GSP has lots to protect, both inside MMA and out of MMA. He has business ventures centering around the GSP "Brand" all over the place, you can go to walmart and purchase his rushfit dvd's, you can go to footlocker and buy his clothing lines.
Taking risks is not something he should be doing. Carefully defending his title is what he needs to do. And is doing successfully.
Any person on the planet, who would be put into the exact same position that Georges is currently in. Would do the exact same thing.
I agree that champions can fight however they choose, but fans can also choose to not purchase fights if they don't like how a champion fights.
I'm not there with GSP yet - even though a lot of his fights go the distance they are usually entertaining. This was the first GSP fight I thought was boring, but will give him a pass on this one (especially with the eye injury).
I thought Anderson Silva's fights with Cote, Leites and Maia were far worse. I haven't bought an Anderson Silva ppv since Maia.

this!
he also dropped him with a jab early on in the fight and did nothing! Take him down and GnP him out, you're not knocking him out on the feet.
I agree that GSP is not as exciting as say, Chris Lytle. Even Matt Hughes is more exciting now. But they're not holding the belt.
For the guy on top of the hill there is no reason to chase a guy who's already rolling down.
I agree with Evil. You fight to win. Whatever gets you paid.
Illmatic is the biggest troll on these forums.
just think if anderson and gsp fought. they would both be throwing jabs while moving backwards until they ran into the back of each other on the other side of the ring. knocking the backs of their heads for a tko draw.
Contenders get title shots based on victories but also excitement. They have a much greater incentive than a champion to take risks and look for the finish.
Some folks didn't watch Superbowls with the Steelers in them, because they were mainly defense. Same with the Spurs for the NBA championships - mainly defense, some folks didn't watch. Same with Devils in the Stanley Cup, mainly defense, some folks didn't watch.
Sport is about winning, and sometimes the best way to win is a good defense and solid game plan. WWE and movies are about entertainment, and so you can have a lot of crazy looking techniques which are fun to watch. But when I'm watching sport, I like to see a team do their best to win, even if that means a grinding running game and solid defense.

And when he follows him to the ground and gets caught in a sub a la Fedor and Werdum, what would you say them?
philsmmaworld -Oh. Ok. I could just sit here and have zero opinion of anything and continue meandering through the day, however, this is how I feel. It doesn't have to be explained away. I'm not right. I'm not wrong. I'm a big GSP fan and I always get hyped up for his fights. If he follows him to the ground and gets subbed so be it. I may have a different opinion on that, like maybe he shouldn't have done that. But that's the beauty of having an opinion, you get to have it about everything.cycklops

My opinion of Nick Diaz, without knowing him from Adam, is that he's just a thuggish ass, but I love watching him fight. He brings it each and every time. Is there a time and a place to take it easy, take no chances, try to coast? Sure. Evil brought up a good point about everything GSP has outside of the cage and it's substantial, he's doing what's right by him.
Maybe if there wasn't so much talk about GSP being p4p I wouldn't care so much that he appears not to utilize all of the talent he has.
whatever excuses you have to make for your favourite fighting being easily the most boring champion in mma.
talking about business ventures and all this stuff. why dont you just admit he is not a fighter haha.
like it's been pointed out before.. the shortest way of describing gsp and his ways.
he's an athlete, not a fighter.
whether that's good or bad, i don't know. it's usually impressive, not always exciting. same with jon jones. just watch as he starts defending his belt.

agreed. With the spotlight on Jones, everyone will be studying how to beat him. He's going to have to be incredibly innovative to stay ahead.
agree with thread title

agreed. A solid defense is one way to win. As a champion, it's pretty much required...literally and figuratively you are 'defending' the belt.
