So, I'm talking to a guy at work about fights. Pacquiao vs Bradley III comes up. I agree that its a pick em fight because I think Bradley is closer to his prime than Manny at this point in their careers. However, he seems to think that Teddy Atlas will be the difference. Mainly because "Teddy learned from Cus D'Amato bro!"
I had to remind him that Freddie Roach learned from Eddie Futch. Coworker proceeds to try to argue that Cus was a better trainer than Futch. I proceeded to tell him he is nuts. What say you forum family? Who was the more accomplished trainer? I say Futch and it ain't even close.
Futch and it's not even fucking close. Futch and Cus aren't even in the same universe
Futch undoubtedly. Just count the championships and the quality of fighters. Now if we are talking Atlas vs Roach, it's much closer, but still Roach. Most people who believe Cus was one of the best coaches ever believe the sensationalized 'made for tv, he's a fucking Jeid Master' bullshit put out by Tyson's people back in the 80's. I'm not saying Cus wasn't a good trainer, but he wasn't even doing the work in the gym with Tyson. That was Atlas and Rooney, not Cus. Futch was still working corners until he was very old. People want to believe Cus was better and more influential than he was. But if we were judging him on his work with Torres and Patterson, he's not in the conversation. People just like the allure of the 'old master and the tamed young beast' that was made for print.
Even Atlas is very critical of the reality of Cus D'amato vs the myth. Some of it comes off as sour grapes, but most of it's true. Roach isn't nearly as good a trainer as Futch IMO, but he's still pretty good.
I think Freddie would agree that he's not in Futch's league. To be fair, most big name trainers left the bulk of the gym work to others. Then, they'd come in for the last few weeks to fine tune the boxers. Cus had Teddy, Futch had Freddie, George Benton had Tommy Brooks, etc, etc...
cus and futch aren't even close
chadk - I think Freddie would agree that he's not in Futch's league. To be fair, most big name trainers left the bulk of the gym work to others. Then, they'd come in for the last few weeks to fine tune the boxers. Cus had Teddy, Futch had Freddie, George Benton had Tommy Brooks, etc, etc...I know most of the guys who trained with Angelo Dundee did camps separately and came to Dundee 's to set the game plan. But I got the impression Futch was a little more involved with the fighters typically.

i'm truly flabbergasted that the guy could even think that.
he could solve every great fighter. and his style always matched the fighter. he had norton prepared for ali. montell griffin had roy so perplexed in their first fight.
i'm in a facebook group and the question was asked who would win spinks or roy jones. so many guys were saying jones, my mind was baffled. from the usual 'roy was too fast' to even roy hits to hard, lol. all i could think is spinks with futch is his cornered would have made roy look like a complete buffoon
Buddie, I believe Futch (and the others) probably did this more as they got older. Had to pace themselves more. Pharochuck, I've argued tooth & nail with Jones fanboys about Bob Foster, Spinks and others who I believe would have beat RJJ lol. Seriously, I think Foster would have KO'd Roy in frightening fashion. I'm talking a ko that would cause people to quit watching boxing.
Bob Foster would've put Roy in a coma. Literally. He would've KO'd him and probably almost kill him in the process.
Which Roy probably wouldn't have even gotten into the ring with Bob Foster
Stern - Bob Foster would've put Roy in a coma. Literally. He would've KO'd him and probably almost kill him in the process.
Which Roy probably wouldn't have even gotten into the ring with Bob Foster
guys like foster, spinks, qawi, matthew sadd muhammad would have all been brutal matchups for roy
