Awesome podcast, and Mark Coleman’s a legend, there’s just different stories out there like from jerry bolander that are different, the story needs to be confirmed by a third party, I wish they would have asked him about the KO from Shamrock they only addressed one part of the story or rumor, it’s not a big deal just there’s other versions of the story out there

Big johns podcast takes fan questions and I want to ask him about the Pete Williams fight, that’s messed up he did that stuff

Coleman got pretty fired up about the Williams fight. He called McCarthy a son of a bitch and a liar. The no fence grabbing rule had been in place for the last six or seven events leading up to UFC 17 but it seemed to not exist during this fight. At one point, Williams was clinging onto the face with both hands while both feet or off the ground keeping Coleman from taking him down and McCarthy just stood and watched.

The controversy was addressed afterword and it got said that grabbing the fence was only prohibited if it was done to stall the action, but using the fence to gain or keep an advantageous position was permitted. WTF? Yeah, that seemed to be the only fight in the history of the UFC where the rule was enforced in that way.

It was during this period that the UFC definitely seemed to play favorites with certain fighters and tried to manipulate the results of their fights. I’m a huge Bas Rutten fan but it’s undeniable that the fix was in during both his UFC fights. BJM kept restarting the Kohsaka fight until Rutten knocked him out. It didn’t matter how active Kohsaka was or how much damage he was doing on the ground. And of course you can’t defend the decision in the Randleman fight.

That all makes sense, the explanation for the fence grabbing is a good way to avoid admitting blatant favoritism for specific fighters, I’m guessing that’s how big John would answer it, Rutten definitely got special treatment in his fights, maybe the ufc didn’t like hammer house fighters, interesting stuff either way

I’ll have to go back & listen to this thing again.Me being the big Lion’s Den fan that I am pretty much only remember the Williams kick. Here is the video that you can watch that does show Pete grabbing the cage like a madman, but it didn’t stop the takedowns.Mark eventually got them & was still able to G-n-P.

Appreciate the interviewer digging deeper on the stories and allowing Mark to expound, I wasn’t aware Coleman spent time at Foxcatcher, enjoyed it!

Here is the thing that I am glad was addressed in the interview

Any time Mark touched the fence, BJM would aggressively warn Mark about taking a kinky from him.

Then when Mark would attempt a take down, Pete would grab the fence in order to maintain his position… with no warning or verbal exchange coming from BJM

Davis breaks it down correctly, they tilted the table against Mark in order to run him out of there

At the time the Brazilians ran MMA abs as noted earlier in the podcast, they were scared of Mark.

Guess who Lobbied Orode to get rin of headbutts?
Mark will answer that question in the next interview
FYI Mike and I talk every day, we are close friends

I’ve really been enjoying Chris, Miguel, and Mike doing those deep dives into the old days of the sport. It’s nice that they’re keeping the history alive. Newer fans have no idea how crazy and fascinating the NHB era was. I could listen to those stories all day.

BJM also claims to have pinned Mark against the wall when he challenged a bunch of Brazilkims at the UFC after party to a fight…

No way would Mark let that happen

I think BJM has some questions to answer that will be addressed in person

Where in the interview does he talk about Ken Shamrock?

Near the very end.

Doesn’t matter that he finished the takedowns while Williams grabbed the Fence, he in detail and very specifically broke down why that affected the fight and took way more energy than it should have. He also said he didn’t know Williams was grabbing the fence and just thought he was that strong until he watched the fight afterwards, so they affects him physically and mentally.

Check out MMA TruFan. The production quality isn’t the best but it’s still pretty interesting to listen to the old guys talk about the old days.
