Jose Aldo dominated the first round of his UFC 129 bout against Mark Hominick. However, shortly into the second round, the champion visibly gassed. Joe Rogan speculated that it could be a result of a bad weight cut, bringing up that Aldo was light headed and had to excuse himself during the Q&A portion that featured the Super Seven UFC champs. It seems that wasn't the case though.

Right before Rogan interviewed Aldo, Aldo complained to his cornerman Marlon Sandro that he should have taken more antibiotics. He spoke in his native Portuguese, and the remarks escaped immediate notice. The English translation is: "Antibiotics would not have helped at all, you’re the champion kid, f--- antibiotics, everything is okay. You fought well, smooth and composed. "
Now Aldo's coach, Nova União founder Andre Pederneairas, reveals that the fighter was taking antibiotics for a foot infection only days before his last weekend title defense against Mark Hominick.
“He suffered a cut on his toe [on April 23] and it got infected with bacteria,” said Pederneiras. “He went through heavy medical treatment with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory pills from Sunday to Tuesday. He took the heavy dosage so that he wouldn’t have to take more drugs closer to the fight.”
“I can’t say whether [the fact Aldo took antibiotics] affected his performance. I’m not a doctor,” said Pederneiras. “I prefer to give credit to Hominick’s effort for taking the fight that deep, rather than saying if the medicine affected him or not.”
Pederneiras also discussed Aldo fighting teammate Diego Nunes, should Nunes beat Kenny Florian at UFC 131 on June 11.
“I think it will be against Chad Mendes,” Pederneiras says of Aldo’s next fight, “but Diego and everyone from Nova União knows that if they have to fight against each other, they will. I just don’t know how we would manage it, but they know they’re fighters and it’s their job. If the boss orders it, we’ll work on that situation. They’ll fight against whoever they’re matched with.”
