Coming to Hawaii for 10 days in May

so as for local food places i kind of dont really know of much. if i am outer island i am either with my wife and we are doing the romantic ooof everywhere thing.staying at a hotel chillin. or as a family hanging out with aunties and uncles staying, eating over there houses. although on the bI in kona they have some good chinese restraunts and most places rock a good fish plate.sorry i dont remember the names i just know how to get there.

while on the BI you should go to south point. awesome place to check out! (youtube)on the right side of south point the water is beautiful and you guys can jump off the ledge in to crystal clear water. on the left side get hits by the trade winds but a little walk in will take you to the green sand beach.

honokahau pier in kona in the afternoon to see all the chaterboats come in and check out there catches. if you have the time and money go charter a boat. lmk if your going to do this? i can recomend some boats.

So if you're going to the volcano you should prob try to hit up a VRBO for a rental in the area.  Or check out Volcano House Hotel as recommended earlier - it is located within the National Park.  There is also Kilauea Lodge that is located in the small town right up the road from the National Park.

Kilauea Lodge also has the best dinner in that area, its pricey but pretty good.  http://www.kilauealodge.com

There is also Thai Thai Restaurant (surpringly serving Thai food) in the village.  http://www.lavalodge.com/thai-thai-restaurant.html

There's a winery that's worth a look if you're up for a little tour and a buzz. volcanowinery.com

The area is pretty small and don't expect any night life or even really beaches on that side or even much to do outside of the park - and it's pretty far from both of the population centers of the island - basically the middle of nowhere.  But if you want to see the Volcano its worth the trip as it might be your only shot.  If you want to get to more populated areas with the more beachy feel you're going to have to travel to the Kona side of the island.  Which airport are you flying into?  Kona or Hilo are the two airports on the island

If you don't eat at paia fish market on the way to hana you are dead to me Phone Post 3.0

flying to maui now.

New update:

Lahaina Luau booked for Sunday night. Searched online for cheap tickets and couldn't find any.

I have a friend who works for Fairmont. She hooked me up with her staff rate at the Big Island Fairmont! Pretty pumped.

I've been trying to read online about Big Island and I've heard transportation can be a pain.

I don't want to do a car rental. Won't need it other than getting to and from the airport.

Not sure what to do. What do you guys think? Phone Post 3.0

You need to rent a car on the Big Island, there is no public transportation and the taxi fees are ridiculous.  You'll be on the west side of the island so you'll want to check out beaches - 69's (its a beach, google it) potentially hapuna and mauna kea (the beach, the mountain requires 4x4 and will potentially have angry hawaiians constructing huts and comparing ebt cards.) if weather permits you'll want to go to pololu valley in kohala - blacksand beach.

imho, do the sunrise thing haleakala first then go to hana? or just make it a long day and drive in and drive out. waking up crazy early to see the sunrise and driving out of hana first is alot. your going to stay over night in hana just to leave at 3 in the morn.crazy! do haleakala the next day.

they are retarded here i maui. i shit you not.

you can apparently get shuttles from the airport to hotel and back for a flat rate which isn't too bad.  But then you'll be fairly commited to staying in the resort.  I guess if you're only here for a couple days then not too big of a deal if you don't travel the island.
