First of all, I wanna give a HUGE CONGRATS to Jens and
his camp. I have nothing to say but good things about
them. Very nice guys! Jens is a tough MOFO. That
triangle was really tight. True warrior.
That said, I have to clear some things. Everybody who
knows me know that I never make excuses and/or
complains about my losses, but I have to disagree with
Kipp Kholar about his call for this fight. After
reviewing the tape, there was 2 points for a takedown
and 1 point for a cervical that were ridiculous. Other
then that, he let Jens simply stand up, turn his back
on me and walk away from my guard, avoiding the ground
game. That was his strategy, thats ok, but in all my
previous NAGA fights, Kipp always said that this wasnt
allowed. I dont know why he let this happen this time.
Please, I dont mean to disrespect Jens or anybody from
his camp, neither take away his credit for the win.
One more time, congrats Jens Pulver.
Parrumpinha
Congrats to both of you for a quality fight.
HUGE SHOW OF RESPECT BY A TOUGH FIGHTER!! Parrumpinha, you will come back!! Good job!!
ttt
Jens triangled him?!? Shit...
hey man I have not seen the fight and I have the most respect for you, but I just want to point out a trend about these grappling tournies and see if anyone else has noticed.
Anytime a big name grappler loses, he and his camo disagrees with the ref. Has anyone noticed this trend?
Parrumpinha triangled Jens... Jens did escape but jens himself said that he was close to going out.
As for Parrumpinha... He is an Icon of sportsmanship. He is a great competitor and is always a gentleman off the mats. I have never heard him make an excuse for anything.
I have not seen the video but usually in naga you are not allowed to disengauge from the ground game and walk away. That is usually penalized.
Congrats to both guys. I had a feeling Jen's wrestling would be hard to overcome in this match and at the same time Parrumpinha is among the 3 best guys in the USA at his weight and Jen's even hanging with him let alone winning in overtime is a HUGE accomplishment.
ttt
Classy post. Its damn near impossible to beat parrumpinha on the ground. ttt for att
The takedown was damn close and I would need to see the tape to make a call on it.
I did not understand the 1 point given to Jens for a "crucifix or stockade". I did not think it was a sub attempt and Parrumpinah did not defend it as such.
Jens did "leave' the ground engagement once or twice during scrambles.
Nonetheless, it was a great match and I would love to see a rematch.
Parrumpinah, I am very proud of you. You looked awesome.
Wade
That was the classiest negative response to a decision I think I ever read here.
And on the subject of positive things, that was the mother of ALL triangles that Jens was in. I am not sure how he didn't go out.
The match was extremely close. Both men are champions. In these cases, as a decision has to be made (there are no draws in a NAGA Superfight), it is often on the slimmest edge.
Kipp, who incidentally holds and expressed to me more than once the highest admiration for both athletes, may have a different view. I was just keeping score, but will try to respectfully respond to each point made.
The 2 points for a takedown. Matt Santos and I were sitting there, and the decision was a hard one. When two guys at this level compete, the results are not a textbook level change penetrate turn the corner end up in top side. It looked to me as I remember like a snapdown. Kipp very quickly asked both Matt and I if it was a takedown and we said yes. He thought so too, and called a td.
I will look at the tape of course, and then may respond again. To be honest, my flight was horribly delayed by the weather and Kipp didn't get me at the airport till 3:00 am and it was near an hour to the hotel. To get ready we were up at 7:00 am. Friday I opened my gym at 6:00 am too, so by the end of reffing for eight hours, I was not the sharpest I have ever been. That said, at the time, although it was very, very close, I saw a takedown.
1 point for a cervical. Santos talked to Jens about it afterwards and went over set ups for it, and application, and like that. Santos said it hurts. It is a standard part of Jens' submission game. Parrumpinha did visually appear to be if not in danger at least under a lot of pressure. I thought giving it one point, as it was not something as obvious as a rear naked, was a reasonable call. Further, at the very end, Jens had a banana split, again a stock part of his game. There was no call of this.
Jen's backing out of Guard. Kipp will hopefully post his own thoughts, but it appeared to me as if Jens was generally trying to further his chances at a submission, by furthering position. The tape may record that Jens' corner was SCREAMING at him to back up and out, but he would not, and instead pressed in. In the course of this pressing forward, he did at some point stand, and then try again to get the td, and again press for furthr advanatage on the ground. Again, I thought Kipp's call was fair here, as this was not a case of shoot and immediately back out.
As I said, these are just the opinions of one exhausted scorekeeper (got under 10 hours sleep in three nights). I have the highest, the highest respect for Parrumpinha, both as an athelete, and for the way he conducts himself.
Kirik,
You are right. It was a very close fight and the calls were sunsequently close as well. The ref does not have the ability to review a tape prior to making the calls as we do in critiquing them later.
I would love to see jens do more submission grappling and a rematch between these two.
Wade
A rematch in florida would be huge!
ttt for a classy post!
and yes, I too, would love to see a rematch as well as Jens in a lot more grappling matches.
santos wassup! Monson has argued against himself with ref's before... strange but true :).
Charles- Thanks for your words.
Kbeesy - I am not trying to change anything neither
crying about the result. I am just expressing my
feelings about something that I dont thing was right.
Kirik & Matt - I understand that being an entire day
reffing and judging is a tough job, but I have to
desagree with you. I saw the tape after the fight for
at least 10 times on our way back to Florida and I can
tell you that wasnt a takedown, neither a crucifix/
cervical defense and he WALKED AWAY FROM MY GUARD (not
my flying half guard!) at least 3 times, and Kipp
should have told him to engage again and he didnt.
Why? because Tim Silvia was screaming on his corner? I
dont know. Again, HE WON. NO EXCUSES. CONGRATS AGAIN.
My point is Kipp wasnt fair.
Parrumpinha don't listen to Kbreezy he is just a man with a bad haircut
Dont say he "wasnt fair".
I think it would be more appropriate to state" he wasnt consistant".
I wasnt suggesting that you were wrongfully making excuses for a loss, I was more suggesting that maybe something needs to be done about the rules or something.
I just think it is ridiculous. If two big name grapplers compete against each other lately, I really love watching the match because of the technique. But I could really care less who wins lately because someone always has something to say about the rules or the reffing or the decision. And everybody is going to have their won opinion on the thing anyway. So unless I am watching the match and getting to see some great ground work, it really dont matter to me who wins or loses.
