Could Santos' failed test save the division?

GeoDim - So let's keep a dead 145 division around for the possibility that Gina may grace us with her presence once again? No thanks. Kill the division off for now and build up 135. Once 135 is deep, you can add 145. From her interview with AH, it seems that Gina's future in MMA depends solely on her financial security; it's her backup plan.

145 is not deep enough to warrant its own division.

I couldn`t agree more with this post from top to bottom. The only thing that I would like to add is that an argument could be made that the 145 pound class was made for Gina or with Gina in mind.

FoxNewb11 - I think so. Cyborg chased everyone out of the 145lb. division, with her out it opens up for the competition again.
Isnt that weird? The division becoming stronger/bigger because the strongest and biggest left? Makes it pretty weak imo <img src="/images/phone/apple.png" alt="Phone Post" border="0" style="vertical-align:middle;"/>

What makes a strong division? One dominant fighter or several on a more equal footing? I say the latter.

When Mike Tyson was steamrolling everyone he was the biggest draw in sports. Floyd Mayweather is currently the biggest draw, and is 42-0. More than a million people paid to see him against Victor Ortiz, a fighter no one thought had a chance.

Wasn't it more interesting say, when you had Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman and Ken Norton around at the same time?
Yes, when a sport has 4 or 5 active HOFers it's better off. The women's 145 division is not on that level.

no way, the 145 lbs women's division is dead now

The point being more is better, having a competitive division is better for the division than having one person steamrolling everyone. I felt the same way about Anderson Silva until Sonnen came along to give him a challenge.

It's one of the reasons I enjoy watching Bellator for example, they may not have all the best fighters but they are on the same level which makes competitive and interesting matches.

Gender roles aren't "imposed by society". Sorry, gender isn't a social construct, your politics have got you very confused. IMO.

Stone pony, sorry that you want all hot women competing in the sport but that just shows your own bias, IMO.

It's entertainment, don't try to pretend they're curing cancer out there. We demand that many entertainers (like 99% of fermale singers in their prime) be attractive if they want people to pay the big money to watch them, why should this set of entertainers have a different standard?

How many years has Coker been saying Gina's gonna fight for? People haven't believed that in a long time.

gender is a social construct, genetic sex is biologically determined. "gender" is the associated attitudes and behaviors society deems appropriate for both the male and female sex. there IS a difference. Phone Post

Why not just merge the 145 women's and men's division. Its not like it would be much different for the women who have already fought Cyborg. Hell, in some cases it might be an easier fight than the one they had with Cyborg.

At this point, it's going to be hard for Gina to make 145, much less 135! Phone Post

Yes I'm sure you like to believe there's a difference. And, studies of chimpanzees showing male adolescents picking up sticks to play with, using them as weapons play-weapons, while females pick them up and care for them like babies, that's just more social pressure and influence from what they've seen in movies right?

There's social pressure for a woman not to deform herself grotesquely with hormone injections. That doesn't mean the differences between the genders are imaginary or artificial.

I'd like to know where u get ur studies... but u seem like the type to seek out only information that affirms your preconceived beliefs. while I know that the necessity if procreation indeed requires fundamental physical differences between the sexes, behaviors are entirely different because they're learned (in the case of these chimps I would assume the young ones were modeling the social structures and roles that were being carried out in their larger group). why we learn certain behaviors and then subsequently adopt them is another discussion entirely, but words like "dainty" have no place in an objective discussion of WMMA. not condoning PEDs or their use by either sex, btw. it is precisely because of the current social construct of "female gender" that u seem to take offense to what I say, and who I am. Dust601 - How many years has Coker been saying Gina's gonna fight for? People haven't believed that in a long time.

A large part of the reason the 145lb division is in the shape it's in is because SF wasted so much time daydreaming for Gina to come back and not mention wasting a lot of time trying to convince Erin Toughill to get her butt into the cage and fight. In the meantime a lot of fighters left the division or left MMA altogether.

With Cyborg out there will definitely be more fighters willing to compete at 145. Their will be far fewer cases of fighters signing with SF to fight at 145 only to come to the amazing realization that 135 is truly their ideal weightclass.

Welcome back 58 Miles!

Despite how sure of yourself you always seem to be, I guess that's not always the case is it?

I never play keyboard toxicologist with any fighter, period end of story. IMO all athletes should be presumed steroid free until proven otherwise.

all Santos hs to do to be forgiven is play the heel.

glupe - UG news writers worse than CRE and SuperCalo put together.

Gina only want's to fight again if she can't make a living acting, that's a fact. She has yet to even discuss contracts with Strikeforce, and is waiting for her movie to premier to make a decision on what she's gonna do next.

I hope it's obvious to everyone that a female fighter would make 10x or even more money being apart of popular movies.

That wasn't the UG writers, that was a quote from Coker. He's trying to put his promoter spin on it, which is naturally to mention the biggest names he can to draw attention to his promotion.
