Counterattacks to Jon Jones Eye-Poking?

Aside from uncompromising Jones fans and teammates (although perhaps not his sparring partners?), there's an overwhelming consensus among both MMA fans and fighters that Jones is getting away with eye murder.

At this point, despite continued fouls and the risk for permanent injury to victims, refs are effectively doing nothing about his pokes and his tactics he employs to make them so commonplace. Referee warnings clearly have done nothing to change matters and still to this day Jones has not had a single point deducted for them. To put this in perspective, a point deduction in his fight against Gustafsson would have determined their fight a draw, which many feel is the proper scoring for their fight, poke deductions or not. In any case, in every fight a deduction would have influenced Jones's fighting style towards becoming more sportsmanlike. After all, MMA is sport, not a life-or-death street fight.

So given referee impotence, what options do his opponents actually have? What techniques, possibly from TMAs such as Wing Chun or Kung Fu, are utilized to counter eye-poking? Are fighters simply allowed to punch his outstretched fingers, in hopes of jamming or breaking them? Are there techniques for using the eye socket to fingerbar his digits, or would that be small joint manipulation?

Any and all experts are welcome weigh in. Wolfman, Sam Pai, Reggie Warren, Jr, etc

its amazing how long Jones has been doing this shit and getting away with it

he doesnt throw jabs, he throws finger pokes

I'm not a fan of dirty fighting but at this point f I was his opponent I'd kick jones in the nuts every time he put his fingers in my face and then claim it was an accident because I couldn't see. Phone Post 3.0

I would do the John Cena "You Can't See Me" move really fast to clip and possibly break his finger tips. Phone Post

This.

One technique I'm guessing might work well is a short hammerfist aimed at the tips of his fingers, basically hitting his fingers like a speed bag. This could be done using the lead hand, with minimal wind up and getting the fist back quickly to be ready to defend a counter shot.

Just ridiculous that this even needs to be pondered

The counter or block is nothing new and has been thought for years by master practitioners named Larry, Curly, and Moe.

Perhaps Bones' opponents show mix in some 3 Stooges into their video research.

A quick jab to the fingers at the right angle might cause some damage.

A hook to the wrist or elbow might also break something if thrown hard enough.

It should land too, considering he just leaves that shit out there.

I still say small joint manipulation. Once you're in a clinch, attempt to lock onto a finger and snap it.

Hitting his fingers in mid air and all that bullshit will not work. Someone's been watching way too much Dragonball Z.

lol! at breaking Jones fingers! it is all talk and easy said then done! when you stand in the octagon across bones it is a different world guys.. taking just one kick from him will clear your head up.

you just might get your face broken!

Well, of course it would be incredibly difficult without practice but by now you should really expect the eyepokes and outstretched arms. It's part of his game.

So, fighters should be drilling that in camp, to punish stretched out arms with punches.

And hey, if his toes are any indication, breaking his digits shouldn't be too difficult.

Don't you think, buddy?

Ha... no I just do a lot of speedbag, and I know it wouldn't feel good having my outstretched fingers hammered backwards or into socket. I do agree that throwing full traditional punches (e.g. hooks) to arms doesn't seem like the best idea. An outstretched arm would be a thin, quick-moving target, and I'd think that throwing a power punch at it would open oneself up to a counter.

Maybe I'm wrong though? If the hook to the arm was followed by a cross to the face and then another hook to the face (the standard 3-2-3 combo, with the first hook aimed at the arm) might actually work.

with your left hand u push the hand away to your left, as u strike with your right.

leaves him in a bad position to hit back for that moment, his back is sort of to u

jam your face into his fingers, and go all FIFA on the cage floor and he will eventually lose a point or 2. I bet it would be a really hard habit for him to break. Shitty way to win, but its a shitty thing to do.

They need to crackdown on finger pokes and grabbing the cage. Mattering on the severity 1 warning then take points. If it's bad enough take a point first offense. Let guys run the risk of losing fights due to fouls and they will change their habits.

Do you ever not tow the line for Jones?

Serious question.

It is starting to look like you are actually on his PR team. Phone Post 3.0
