A small excerpt from an interview with Randy.Think the two organizations could ever pull this off?
Couture on the specifics of a possible unification bout against Vanderlei Silva:
"I would pretty much do whatever needed to be done to fight Vanderlei. I'm more interested in unifying than I am in the details of making it happen. Vanderlei is the guy to fight right now and I'd do anything to make it happen. The rules, venue, the ring vs. the cage; none of it really matters to me. I'd be willing to make concessions to make that fight happen. The old UFC days you could kick a guy who is down and head butt and knee, so I don't care if it's under the Pride rules. Vanderlei is a great competitor. I'd fight anybody really. I'm not particular."
I agree.
Problem is the general public wants someone they can identify with. The kind of guy who listens to limp bizkit, talks trash, whoops ass and wears t-shirts after smashing up on opponents. Not someone like Randy who is "dad's" age and is more gentlemanly.
that the society we live in.
Just think who you see on the cover of all the PS2 and XBOX games. Would your kid go run to buy a game with Randy on the box?
i think randy would beat wandy.
it doesnt really make much sense to build a franchise with someone whos future in the UFC can come to an end this year.
Oh yeah and there is no way that Couture loses to Silva, couture will take him down and pound the shit outta him!
randy would spank wandy!
Q Jackson could hook them both up with unbreakable mouth pieces I think someone is gonna need them. What a great fight that would be!
Yeah, Dana should definately market the UFC based around your "friend"'s opinion of something he know nothing about
You cant except every fighter to be like Couture, he is an exception but that is the difference between Randy Couture and Tito Ortiz.
Tito wouldnt even fight the #1 contender in his own promotion.
Randy not only fought - and beat - the guy Tito wouldnt fight, he fought - and beat - Tito too.
Now, what does Randy do? He accepts a rematch with the inconsistent but never the less, one of the most explosive/dangerous fighters in the game, Vitor Belfort and then states that he would be willing to fight Vanderlei Silva anytime, anywhere ("The rules, venue, the ring vs. the cage; none of it really matters to me. I'd be willing to make concessions to make that fight happen").
That tag is so cliche ("anytime, anywhere") but when it comes out of Captain America's mouth, I believe it 100%.
Even more, he wants to fight Vanderlei because he knows Van is the man in Pride and is looking for the next and hardest challenge.
IMO, Tito wanted to become a star more than a fighter (and though it wouldnt surprise me if he is the undisputed #1 LHW down the road).
Couture is a fighter first and then everything else falls into place...
...also, not to harp on Tito so bad (he is still a badass fighter) but the bottom line is always the fights themselves.
I just wanted to take the case of Oscar de la Hoya. ODH gets a lot of 'hate' because of 2 things: chicks dig him and he makes a ton of money. BUT he never ducked anyone. He has by far a more impressive resume of opponents than anyone in his weight class or those he faced (and lost to).
ODH has lost a few because he's fought the best. Everyone that has gunned for him, he's faced: Trinidad (imo, ODH showed he was the better boxer that night), Vargas.
Now, Tito is finally facing Chuck but only after being dominated by Couture and after Chuck's two losses. Its not so bad that Tito lost to Randy but what really bugs me is that imho he robbed the MMA fans of one of the biggest fights to never happen when it could and should have.
He was part of the hugh Shamrock fight and he delivered big time that night (like he did on every other night leading up to Randy) but Liddel was the REAL showdown that had to happen and he ducked that.
Matt Hughes felt an obligation to resolve the controversial fight with him and Newton and then won a TKO. He then faced the best fighters in the planet of the WW div. Sakurai, Castillo, Sherk and Trigg.
I believe Tito still has it in him and with the Chuck fight finally on, I guess its a case of better late than never...
"it doesnt really make much sense to build a franchise with someone whos future in the UFC can come to an end this year. "
Yeah ,thats why they picked Randy instead of Vitor.
Wasa-B is correct.
would love to see this fight
i dont think the UFC has picked Couture to be any type of poster boy
Randy would win in a cage. Silva would win in a ring.
"i dont think the UFC has picked Couture to be any type of poster boy"
This UFC is named "Super Natural". That must of gone over your head bro.
Randy should represent the UFC. He is a class act that has most of this forum in love with his personality. Match that with the fact he comes out with the all american theme. And right now thats a sure fire way to get love from american fans. Not that his intro is how it is for that reason.
If any one fighter is to represent american mma then it's only natural it should be Couture.
IMO, it certainly benefits the UFC if they have an American wrestler belt-holder with "all-American" credentials.
TTT for Randy Couture.
You can barely even hope to be half the man he is at 40 years old.
I dont even think I'll make it to 40.
"This UFC is named "Super Natural". That must of gone over your head bro."
because an event is named after its headlining match doesnt mean that the UFC is trying to make anyone a poster boy, just means they are trying to hype up the main event
I love it how everyone is assuming Couture will beat Belfort, and is already on his way to Wanderlai. Hopefully Couture doesn't, or he'll end up looking at the lights with Big John asking "How many fingers am I holding up?"
edit for spelling
