Cross Knee Pass Counters Video

A while back, there was quite a bit of chatter here about the cross knee pass and defending it. There seems to be very little to be found online concerning counters.

I just shot a study of what I do. I'm hoping that it can be a jumping off point for discussion.

Let me know what you guys think!

(If a blue would be so kind to embed!)

This is great stuff...I hate this pass a LOT because I get jammed up in it all the time.

The thing is, I think it's easier to fight them off when they go for the underhook (as evident by the many counters you show)

The variation of the knee slide pass that jacks me up is when they don't go for the underhook and instead control the lapel near my stomach/lower chest, and glue their elbow to their side. How do you counter this variation? (see vid below)

Setree, I really liked the style in which that was filmed. As a study. Just the constant focus on the pass and all the small variables involved was a good view. Thanks

Part 1 has a section on "lapel defense." If you have lapels, your opponent has lapels. Use them to counter or to back them off.

 For countlphie

Thanks carcaju!

Not a problem. Thanks for the vids.

By the way, Part 2 is where things get most interesting!

ah ok thanks. So all you're doing is grabbing his lapel and pushing him away? (sorry it looked so simple that I must have glossed over it)

knee that mofo in his tail bone and take his back. if no one saw it, i didnt do it

So what does everyone else do? Same? Different? Get passed?

Look what I found:

It's Jeff Glover transitioning to a m'arce after using the near side underhook. Nice.

I've been playing around with kickin back n going to butterfly guard...otherwise I usually get passed n make sure I have the underhook to come up on a single Phone Post

I keep my half guard locked to pinch his ankle, and i pinch his passing knee to my bottom hip.

I tend to face the floor and show my back.

This creates for me a neutral position because it becomes quarter guard really.

Nice..I like it when people want feedback and exchange ideas... Only looked at vid 1 so far..

1) My first reaction against the knee pass is to hide my bottom elbow and cup his knee. He as to turn the knee away from you to finish...You bumping and coming to the knees is all good. But I'd just mention that you really need to be aware of the potential of getting knee barred if you have your weight up high on his back.

2) If he has good pressure and you can't come up to the back..as long as he doesn't have a good underhook you can reach down behind your legs with the underhooking arm and grab his pants. A lot of times you can shrimp back under for dlr guard.

3) when I'm passing I like to jam the lapel but I don't stiff arm and give space. I like to continue with a strong underhook but have the lapel just in case and also make it convenient to feed to my crossfacing hand after I pass. I also like to control his other arm by the elbow instead of the wrist area.

4) If someone is passing you by jamming the lapel or fighting for the underhook, but has "good posture" , if I have reasonable control of my bottom arm I have a lot of success framing and getting arm bars. you jsut need enough space to bring your shin under his armpit.

5) I'm pretty flexible so this isn't for everyone, but if I have sleeve grip on his far arm, which is easy b/c he usually wants that too...I'll loop my leg up over his head in front of his face and put it on that far bicep and get spider guard..If you first try to bring you shin across his hips, it sets this up. They work together.

6) same as before but put it between his legs..This will break the underhook that he may have had..Then you can shoulder roll into 1/2 on the other side.
