D.White explains Griffin/Hughes retirement comment

Article where Dana White further explains his recent comments about wanting Forrest Griffin and Matt Hughes to retire. Can't say there is too much to argue with here, he has some valid points.

What do you guys think?

Forrest should fight little nog...  matt hughes should fight diego sanchez (before his move down).  Right now the UFC needs as many names as it could get.

Both of those fights are meaningless Phone Post

One of the things that you guys have to understand is…some of the people out there are smashing me. ‘Who are you to tell somebody when they should be able to retire? It’s their decision and everything else.” White said on a recent Google+ chat. “Guess what, this isn’t like you’re working at GE, you work for Microsoft and I’m coming and telling you ‘you should retire,’ this is the fight business. When you get to a certain point, and even some of these, some of the fans, guess what? I know more than you do.”

In the specific cases of Hughes and Griffin, White feels the two former champions have done all they can in the sport and although they can still put on great fights, reclaiming their championship glory is farfetched at this point. White says if you can’t win or at the very least compete for a UFC title, then why bother?

“I know how much money these guys got, I know exactly what’s going on in these guys heads. Neither one of these guys (Hughes and Griffin) are going to be on another title run, you know what I mean? And you look at a guy like Forrest, and I don’t want to count anyone out, anything is possible, but Jonny ‘Bones’ Jones is nasty, he’s young, you know, this is just a young man’s sport.”

Bravo Mr. White Phone Post

What sense does either of thosr fights make?

Lose lose situation for both nog and diego... Phone Post

I've never cared for Dana but I have to give credit where it's due. There's no way to interpet his words as anything but selfless and genuinely concerned. Phone Post

I agree. They both should retire. Rather see that then a guy like forest take fights with trt and ruin his legacy.

They should both go fight on Spike for Bellator

I get where Dana is coming from but his point that basically "you shouldn't be in the UFC unless you have a chance at the title" is BS. There are plenty of guys in the UFC, some veterans and some young, that obviously don't have the talent to win the title, but they're still fighting with Dana's blessing. I don't quite understand the double standard. If these older legends/popular fighters are still good enough to be solid gate-keepers and the fans enjoy watching them fight, what's the problem?

Edit: OK, he could say he doesn't want them to diminish their image like Ken Shamrock did fighting wayyyy past his prime, but neither Forrest or Hughes is nearly that far gone.
