Daido juku (formal style), /Kudo (sport organization and sport name). Started out as a merge of kyokushin karate and judo 1980. More than a decade before UFC
Nice thing to train if you can find a gym.

Dan the Wolfman fought in a tournament in Japan.
He had an article about it in "Ultimate Athlete" when it was around.

Yeah, he has competed in the sport, but as I understand not trained the style.
I expect him to post in 5.. 4.. 3.. 2.... :-)
Had the privelige to train with Osada Sensei almost 10 years ago now. Top Class person, Fighter, instructor.
Side note is that Ashihara Karate (noteable fighters Semmy Schilt, Davit Kiria) is adding "bubble helmet" rules as an extra rule set. - THe old rules will still be fought under but this new bubblehelmet will be tested also this year..
Here is some highlight from the old and still active rules in ashihara karate without bubblehelmet.
Grabbing allowed (same side) and fullcontact karate. Points are only given for knockdowns (body/head) or a technical sweep that unbalances your opponent and are followed up with a marking strike to the downed opponent.

interesting about the new rules. Are they implemented by NIKO (the main and original ashihara organization, or just by ashihara international (or international ashihara, I can never remember which is which, the holland based faction run by Dave jonker, semmys instructor).
Subbed. I love these matches. The headbutts are fucking sick.
Semmy Schilt won the open weight class of the japanese daido juku championship 1996 and 1997. He was invited as a guest fighters due to friendly connections between his ashihara karate organization (and his instructor Dave Jonkers) and the daido juku organization (and its founder Takashi Azuma). Frankly, he was manhandling the japanese fighters literally half his size.
Sub
Neat. Later.
Subbed.
Sad that despite the history and innovations, JMMA has been so far surpassed. Even today with their level in judo, karate, kickboxing, boxing, wrestling - they should be a lot better at MMA than they are. Big disconnect.
So what are the list of striking and td styles like this?
San Shou/Sanda? Shootboxing (SCUp)? I guess this style is more judo centric since the gi worn in both karate and judo which changes the clinching.
I suppose in Thai, there is still both striking, clinching and throws/trips and done from the upright manner ala judo...which is why i see a lot of sasae type spin trips in Thai right?
There has been one daido juku guys in ufc afaik. Minoki Ichihara was defeated by Royce in UFC2 by a sub after 5min (and change). That was roughly 5 times longer than anyone else Royce fought that day lasted.
A couple of years ago a russian daido juku champ, Adam Khaliev (not to be confused with his brother Khusein Khaliev who fought in Bellator, also a daido juku guy) was signed by ufc and put on the card for ufc on fox 10, in 2014, but the fight was scrapped and he never got a new chance.
Too much flamboyant kicking for my taste, but it would have been fun to see if he could pull it off un ufc too.
I remember Ichihara, he gave Royce the td, would have never been able to tell he was adept in tds or tdd. Do they do newaza in Dj as well?

Yes the do newaza, its part of their judo heritage. But apparently they put less focus on it back then than they do now. BJJ has raised the bar regarding what is necessary, slightly.
in kudo competition, there is a timelimit on newaza before the fight is restarted standing, though.
JohnMc1 - I wish there was Daido Juku/Kudo clubs here in Ireland.
Sadly (in a sense atleast), Daido Juku is crazy strict when it comes to new dojos and quality of teaching. You need an accredited DJ instuctor to move to your area for it to happen, and such accreditation is not handed out after short courses -no matter what other background you have. So it spreads very VERY slowly. It does not help that they apparently have very high franchise fees for dojos to use their brand, even when there IS a accredited teacher.
But there are 4 official dojos in the UK now (not to mention a whole bunch in france), one in wales, so it is slowly spreading closer to you.
There are plenty of small dojos gyms doing basically the same thing as daido juku -with varying quality. But mostly they are just isolated dojos. There are also a few offshoot styles like japanese zendokai (not to be confused with australian zen do kai, which is another style entirely, a mcdojo sharing only a similar name), but if daido juku is small, zendokai is tiny. Tiny as they are, though, they have produced plenty of fighters for the japanese mma scene, esp female fighters.
more from zendokai . To be honest, thete are not many vids out there about it. it is just too small a style.
