The guy sucks! Enough is enough! Its like he's sleep walking in that cage half the time. Fighters have had their heads literally bounce off the cage/mat and he doesnt even notice. He's not attentive enough to work at the level these guys deserve. The sport would be much better off with retired or active fighters being refs.
Refs on the whole should be assessed independently annually.
Can't believe that 20 years into this (UFC wise) that the commissions can't get the refs right.
Mazza is a good guy. Everyone has off days, even Uncle Dana.
Mazz is one of them pst experienced refs out there, I think he does a good job
MMA refs need to have a review board like boxing. Guys like Mazz would never be allowed to ref headline fights on PPV boxing cards.
Bellator Fan - Mazz did nothing wrong in the Fitch fight. He let the match go to a definitive conclusion and Fitch was fine when it was over. No controversy and no early stoppage out of panic.
I think you don't seem to understand why people don't think he's a good ref. in the case of the Fitch fight, he looked lost and indifferent that Fitch was choked unconscious.
We get it, you pretty much say the opposite of Dana but jeez man, Maz is not doing his job consistently. He is constantly out of position, late with stoppages, misses fouls and stops fights when they don't need to. Go watch the Fitch/ Burkman fight and tell me he reacted appropriately to the choke and Fitch being unconscious. He looked like he either didn't care or didn't notice what had happened. And it's not a question of could he have stopped it sooner. It's a question of was he reacting as he should.
Bellator Fan - "I think you don't seem to understand why people don't think he's a good ref. in the case of the Fitch fight, he looked lost and indifferent that Fitch was choked unconscious."What?????
He's not a doctor his job is to enforce the rules and nothing more. I don't refs should be allowed to stop fights either. Leave that up to the fighters/corner during the fight and doctor (in between rounds)
Are you retarded?
A referees job, first and foremost is to protect the fighters. Was he is in the proper position to determine wether Fitch was out due to the choke? NO HE WAS NOT!!!
Anyone at a blue belt level of BJJ, would know where to be. And Mazzagati was clueless. And this is far from the first time.

Couldabeen - Refs on the whole should be assessed independently annually.

Your faith in bureaucratic government hacks is unfortunate.......
UGCTT Molsonmuscle360 - MMA refs need to have a review board like boxing. Guys like Mazz would never be allowed to ref headline fights on PPV boxing cards. It's a lot easier to ref a boxing match IMO.

Bellator Fan -illini89i -Fitch RAN out of the cage under his own power. He was fine after the fight ended and we are now bitching that Mazz was out of position? Nothing happened negatively to Fitch in the big scheme of things besides losing a fight.Bellator Fan - "I think you don't seem to understand why people don't think he's a good ref. in the case of the Fitch fight, he looked lost and indifferent that Fitch was choked unconscious."What?????

I gotta disagree with you man, Fitch did leave on his own but that is more because Burkman was a class act and released the choke when he felt him go out. It is the refs job to protect the fighters, everytime they go in there they have to be on their A game, a man could seriously be injured.
When that choke was in, it was deep. I don't care if Fitch has an ability to get out of a lot of subs, you have to be right on there to know when he was out. Mazz seemed off in the distance, and was even slow to get there after burkman let him go. The second Fitch's leg went limp I think Mazz should have been able to stop it, granted I think Fitch was only out for a second, but still it didn't look like Mazz expressed any hurry to get over there in a very tight submission.
A ref is there to enforce the rules, but they are there to make sure that fighters are ok too, any ref would tell you this.
Bellator Fan - The problem with refs stopping the fight during chokes is the numerous times we see fighters telling the ref that their opponent is out when he's not.
A ref needs to have a knowledge of submissions to be able to know what is a dangerous sub, sometimes it could be difficult to tell if a fighter is out or not. They shouldn't need to be told a fighter is out, I have seen refs come in and grab a guys arm to see if it was limp to make a tough call. IF not the refs job to ensure a fighters safety, who would you say has that responsibility?
Excellent responses crzyJnks. Unfortunately it's impossible to argue with an idiot. As Bellator fan is clearly an idiot.
Bellator Fan - "I think you don't seem to understand why people don't think he's a good ref. in the case of the Fitch fight, he looked lost and indifferent that Fitch was choked unconscious."Wow. That's quite the opinion.

Max didn't even flinch at Fitch going out cold. You could see when he went limp pretty clearly. He has definitely blown a few easy calls.

I like the guy but It almost looks like he's too lazy to actually move and stop a fight. On this case he should have been on his knees right next to the fighters ready for anything.
Just my 2 cents.
Outlaw'd by Lytle - Mazza is a good guy. Everyone has off days, even Uncle Dana.Voted up.

Everybody including Mazaggati knows that it is damn near impossible to choke out Fitch. I was just as shocked as Maz when I realized that Fitch was actually out.
I think he did a decent job. He was giving Fitch the time he needed to work his way out of that choke like he always does. Nothing wrong with that, if he had stopped it before he went out, everybody would be screaming that Fitch would have gotten out of that choke.
Damned if you do, damned if you don't imo.
Dana, I agree. I watched it a few times and even when he went out and Burkman jumped off, Maz was just moving slow, he should of jumped way quicker than that. What he should have done is get his ass down below and watching Fitches face by at least 3 feet away like most great Refs
He needs to grow that pornstache back. He's like Samson.
MartialArtsMixed - Mazz is one of them pst experienced refs out there, I think he does a good job
I don't want anyone to have their career ruined, but Mazz makes some incredibly dangerous mistakes. Making Brock tap out so many times was ridiculous, especially with FRANK fucking MIR cranking on a kneebar. That could've resulted in a career ending injury, and it is inexcusable. Especially since even viewers at home could hear Brock's hand hitting the mat because he was tapping out with such enthusiasm. Wasn't it Steve who stood by and watched Robbie Lawler bouncing Ninja Rua's head off the mat? It was so bad that Matt Hughes walked into the octagon and shoved Mazz.
Actually the lawler fight was Yamasaki's fuckup... my mistake.
