Deadlift #'s?

OK, so I've never really deadlifted before, other than a few times in high school with a trap bar, and once with a trainer about a month ago.

So today, for various reasons, my scheduled work out just wasn't working out. I get into it and say "Fuck it, today is the day I incorporate deadlifts," as I've been wanting to for a while.

I scrap my regular work out, and go to dead lift.

I did:

3x5- 225lbs.
1x2- 315lbs.
1x1- 405lbs.

Is this good? I think I blew my wad in my warm up, and should have gone lighter before building up to my max. I also think I probably could do more if I could get my "head in the game," but today was a shitty day.

BTW- I'm 6'3" 195lbs.

Also, is it horrible that I blew off my normal work out? I feel bad for doing it, but due to a shitty day at work, and the fact that GTG with shoulder press has left my shoulders fried, I just was not feeling it.

Come on guys, I know ya'll have more experience with the deadlift than I do.

If I should be doing more tell me, I'm not too proud.

That was your first time deadlifting on your own and you pulled 405?

What he said ^

"That was your first time deadlifting on your own and you pulled 405?"

LOL!!

Don't make me say it!

I'm gonna say it!

WTH Effect!!!

Yeah.

I just see all these athletes pullin in the 600 lbs. range, so I have no idea what a "normal" guy should be pulling.

I would imagine that there are a good amount of 5-600lbs. deadlifters on here, but I think I did all right with 400lbs.

Normally my long limbs are a killer for me in my exercises, but I feel like having gorilla arms seriously helped me in this.

Don:

405lbs. is PHENOMENAL for a first pull...ever. Nice one!

You're doing great man, keep it up! :)

Phenomenal?

I must have done something wrong then.

I just did some quick research and found that , according to T-Nation, and biggerfasterstronger.com, 405lbs. is "good" for a high school senior athlete with a medium build. Great starts at 455lbs. and All-american starts at 530lbs.

I consider myself medium build, but I'm disappointed that I'm only a "good" high school senior athlete. I thought I was a "good" college athlete when I was there. Assholes.

Well:

  • unless your form was off (i.e., you budged it but an inch while your lower spine popped out of your shirt)

OR

  • Your math got fuzzy and you actually pulled 405 OUNCES (as opposed to pounds)

AND/OR

  • You're posting on this thread from ICU

Then I don't think you did anything wrong.

I used the form the trainer I worked with taught me: start low, feet flat, weight on my heels, initial lift is with my legs, and finish the pull with my back and ass, stand straight up, and push my hips forward. Then back down and reset completely.

OK, I guess I feel a little better.

I just didn't like the comparison to high school athletes. Damn kids.

Like I said, I almost felt like I was cheating because of my arms. I have a 36 1/2"-37" arm, so I felt like I wasn't moving the bar all that far. I mean I have a 34" inseam, so I have long legs too, but my arms are freak long, and I think that made a huge difference in my favor.

Unless you weigh 350, that is an insane lift for your first time and far from bad even if you've been doing it a long time.

With those height/weight proportions, that's a fantastic first time pull.

Thanks guys.

Xen, what kind of program did you get on to get up to that number?

I've now become obsessed with the DL.

Back in March of 2000 I got 470 at a BW of 144.

Seriously doubt I could do it now though...

"Back in March of 2000 I got 470 at a BW of 144."

That's just nuts.

I'm happy with my 495 for 2 strict singles about 3 weeks ago at a bodyweight of 225 or 230 depending on how much water I'd had that day.

Haven't lifted seriously since.
