Dear Bellator...

I love your fights and I love the tourney format but a complaint that I keep hearing from friends is how each week while they get ready to watch (for instance) the next round of the lightweight bracket, they forget who "cupcake" fought last round (3 weeks ago) and don't even recognize the other dude. I'm a pretty dedicated fan but there's only so much room in my head also.

How about an easily accessible bracket sheet to track the progress of the tourney week to week?

Maybe one day you can contract with Pepsi and each different flavor can come with the side of the case being a weight class for the season. Pepsi reg. can be heavy weights, Pepsi Zero can be bantamweights, etc... But for now, how about a printable one available on the website?

Seems like something simple to help make a great format a little more cohesive and easier to follow.

Flame away...

They should just do one night tournaments.

Cause one night tournaments are fucking awesome.

a main reason why the tournament format has been a failure... people cant keep track of all of them.

You must have a weak ass memory. I barely watch Bellator and I still know what's going on. They break it down for you before every single fight. All you need to do is start to pay attention. Phone Post

i'm just presenting a solution to a concern that i had heard voiced. not everyone is a hardcore fan and some people may not even watch it unless they have a reminder of who's what this week.

is that indicative of a weak-ass memory?
maybe but it seems to be a prevelent problem that a for profit company could easily address.

Im going with weak ass memory. Donkey not to intelligent imho..... lol just kidding u nut hugging bellator lover Phone Post

TTT.

I enjoy the original idea and applaud the fact that you took the time to iron all of this out on your own with nobody else's help and or input. Phone Post

It seems like it would be easier to get a perspective on who a fighter is if he fought recently. It's a perfect format for the MMA fan who has a short attention span.

But for those who haven't seen the previous rounds, I guess they could do a better job of recapping how a fighter reached that point right before every fight and have a transparent bracket. They used to have a transparent bracket, but I think they eventually decided they preferred match making a little, which is fine with me personally. That makes for better match-ups and everybody still needs to win the same amount of fights to emerge victorious.

They could also promote cards better by having more off weeks and time between tourney matches. I'd like to see them increase the gap between tourney matches to around two months when they move to Spike. The 3-hr main cards will help facilitate that, as will starting in January instead of March. The two month gap would also benefit fighter health. That's around the amount of time doctor's recommend you take off after a concussion IIRC. I feel like the turnaround is far too quick for fighters like Spang and Weedman who took a beating in the previous round in spite of advancing.

while I understand and apprechiate your point about fighter health, 3 weeks is almost at the outside of the time limit for causual memory IMO.

Any longer would just kill interest further.

I like ur idea for sure. It would keep more intersest in the tourny. I also think that now with spike behind them they do a weekly show showcasing all the tournament fighters with clips of training and living all the way to the finals. Kinda like 24/7 scaled down though to show a ittle of everyone till the finals and have it be a countdown style for finals Phone Post

Lol i dont use many comas or periods. Phone Post

You and your friends must really be having trouble with the SF HW Grand Prix then. A 4-month tourney like I'm suggesting would be 4 times faster.

What happens when GSP returns? You guys can't tell the difference between him and Ed Faaloloto?

The UFC has a pseudo tournament system. Fighters work their way up the ladder. How many rungs it has just may vary depending on the fighter and the space between fights is far greater than I'm suggesting.

Barboza is on a win streak and has fought once every 4-5 months, yet people don't have a problem remembering who he is. The difference is promotion, like I'm suggesting, and stimulation. They'd get more promotion from increased time between fights, and fans more stimulation from them being in arenas, with louder crowds (they're excluding college and high school kids holding events in indian casinos), and the better TV production they'll receive in Spike. A lot of fighter resonance will just come naturally with time and exposure.

That is a great point. A weekly update or Tv show would make it a lot easier to follow. I DVR and watch every bellator usually on that Sunday or Monday and sometimes Ill be like a minute or two into a fight and it will dawn on me "o yeah this is the guy that made that ko'd that Brazilian a couple weeks ago." Or whatever, I think part of the reason its hard to follow is bellator has done an amazing job of finding new international talent. Guys a lot of us havent seen or heard of. But the shuffling of tournaments each week makes it confusing IMO especially with guys bouncing around in weight classes. Another idea is to just put on events every 3 weeks and have the whole fight card be the tournament participants. Builds anticipation for upcoming events and makes it easier to follow. Just my two cents Phone Post

I agree, much harder to remember fighters who fight every 3 weeks compared to every 6 months...

When was the last time you attended a 1 night tourney that wasnt on a Native Reserve?

i don't disagree with any of what you've written (well, accept the "UFC is a tourney" thing) the fact remains i believe the problem i outlined exists and the solutions your proposing are going to take time and money.
in the meantime,
i just want a bracket i can print off.
