Defense against Neck Crank

Are there any decent defenses against the basic neck crank where your opponent puts one arm under your neck, grips the bicep of the other arm, and then usees the other arm to push down on your head/forehead? I've been caught with this one a few times lately and have been tapping very quickly because I dont want to mess around with my neck. What defenses are available to me?

Thanks,

I asked this question of an instructor once, and he gave me the usual "don't get in it". He said that I need to keep my neck protected better, because once the crank is sunk, you're fucked, just like the RNC. Unfortunately, you will probably find this advice about as helpful as I did.

LOL..I asked a few guys at my club and was told the same thing.

Put your feet in opponents hips and push him away before he gets the second arm in position. You probably see this coming as soon as he starts to wrap your neck.

Also, if he is in a posture wher he can do this, you could be attacking him to keep him busy defending.

Hope this helps a little.

I take it you mean when you are mounted, hence feet on hips won?t help.

When they comit to this choke bridge them over in a standard upa mount reversal.

Just make a frame with your hands on either side of your face. He will not be able to crank the neck with your wristbones interposed and you can still execute a elbow escape. This is basics.

CockneyBlue is correct. It never occurred to me that this would be a problem from mount. Upa sweep and build a frame to get posture.

Both CockneyBlue and Mat Pimp's defenses work great, but neither one counters the hold once it's in there. Once it's in, the only thing the gets people out seems to be relaxing their shoulders and trying to wiggle out by squirming down and away. So use your feet to drag yourself down on the mat. That's iffy though, pretty low percentage. This crank is not easy to escape. That's why I love doing it.

I don't like this attack from the top, you have overcomitted your weight forward with nothing to base other than your feet. It is far too easy to reverse someone with this. If they base with their feet, regain guard and sweep.

I remember the first time I got caught with this. The guy locked it in from mount and I did the standard upa to reverse it. Before I could even get all the way to my knees, he stretched out. It sounded like a chiropractor cracking away.

It didn't hurt, but scared the hell out of the guy I was training with. The pain came the next day, though.

I tap now, if I get caught in this. Not because of the pain at the moment, but the pain that follows in the days to come.

The best defense I've found is to catch it before he's able to use the top arm. As soon as he gets one around the back of your head, use your opposite arm and shove it into the crook of his other arm.

I believe it was Bolo that recommended this via his forum.

Hope this helps.

I'm not 100% sure if I have the right neck crank in mind, but can't you just comb your head to get out of it.

sayonaisse, nope because your arm would be outside the choke so can't see that helping.

this technices never work on me and no one do it anyway. I really thought it did not work.

Oh it works. It helps to be heavier I guess.

Sha, the guy asked for a defense against it, not an escape from it. If you keep your hands inside the bus at all times, you will never get caught in this crappy submission.

OK, having said that this is easy to escape, I got caught with an ezekial choke last night from mount (I know it's not the same, but same principals) from now on I will not refer to anything as easy!

Damn you Karma!
